I Learned how to survive in the real life, not in school. I worked during the day and went to school at night. I was a typical working and learning generation. (cf: In the early '60s, when I was in a middle school at night, I had no money to buy a notebook, so I bought a used notebook at a used bookstore in front of Dongdo Middle School in Yomni-dong.) At that time, President Park Chung-hee valued commerce. Respected the engineers, too. He emphasized that each person should learn one skill. Thanks to that, I have two skills that I learned at the time. One was electrical technology and the other was English competence. These two skills have been my lifelong companion. Good friends of mine. They are useful skill that people need wherever they live. Even now, I can use my drives and nippers to fix all the mess. Needless to say, it¡¯s easy, practical, and economical for me. Every time I do this, I reaffirm the importance of skill and even discover my own pride. When I was in college, I helped in rural areas in Korea. In fact, I had more to do with electricity in the house than work in the fields. The same was true of foreign countries. Especially in Africa(Luxor Egypt), Southeast Asia(Pagan Miyanma), South America(Rapaz Bolivia). I mean I was able to fix their electrical stuff as much as I taught them English in less developed countries. ³» ÀλýÀ» Åë°·Î ¹Ù²Û ¿µ¾î À̾߱â: ³·¿£ ÀÏÇÏ°í ¹ã¿£ ¾ß°£ ÁßÇб³¿¡ ´Ù³æ´Ù. ³ª¿¡°Ô ¿µ¾î´Â ¹è¿ì¸é ¹è¿ï¼ö·Ï Àç¹ÌÀÖ¾ú´Ù. °øÀå¿¡¼ ÀÏÇÒ ¶© ³²¸ô·¡ Á¾ÀÌÂÊÁö¿¡ ´Ü¾î¸¦ Àû¾î³õ°í ¿Ü¿ü´Ù. ³ª¸¸ ¾Ë ¼ö ÀÖ´Â ÀÛ¾÷ÀåÀÇ ±¸¼®±¸¼®¿£ ³»°¡ Àû¾î ³õÀº ´Ü¾îµéÀÌ ÀÖ¾ú´Ù. ³»°¡ ¿µ¾î¿¡ Ãë¹Ì¸¦ ºÙ¿© ¿½ÉÈ÷ Çϴϱî Çü´ÔÀÌ ´ç½Ã¿£ °í°¡Ç°ÍÔʤù¡À̾ú´ø »ï¼ºÃâÆǻ簡 ³½ ¿µ¾îÈ¸È ·¹ÄÚµåÆÇ(´ç½Ã¿£ Ä«¼ÂÅ×ÀÌÇÁ°¡ ¾ø¾ú±â¿¡ ·¹ÄÚµåÆÇÀ» µ¹·Á°¡¸é¼ È¸È °øºÎÇßÀ½)À» »ç Á̴ּÙ. A story about English that changed my whole life: I worked by day and went to night middle school. The more I learned English, the more interesting it was. When I was working in a factory, I secretly wrote words on a piece of paper and memorized them. I wrote down a lot of English words in every nook and cranny of the workplace. As I worked hard on English, my brother bought me a record(no cassette tape at the time) of English conversation from Samsung Publishing, which was a high-end product at the time. Listening to AFKN, I was crazy to imitate their pronunciation. In school, every time I had English class, I felt happy. Yes, some friends of mine in the class disliked my English power but there were more guys who liked me. ¾î´À ³¯ °©ÀÚ±â ÀÌ·± Àǹ®ÀÌ »ý°å´Ù. ³»°¡ ¹Ì±¹Àο¡°Ô ¸»À» ÇÏ¸é ¹Ì±¹ÀÎÀÌ Á¤¸»·Î ³» ¸»À» ¾Ë¾ÆµéÀ» ¼ö ÀÖÀ»±î? ¸¸¾à ¸ø ¾Ë¾ÆµéÀ¸¸é ¾î¶±ÇÏÁö? º°º° »ó»óßÌßÀÀ» ´ÙÇÏ´ø ³¡¿¡ ³ª´Â ÀÏ¿äÀÏ ³ë´Â ³¯¿¡ ¹Ì±ºÚ¸ÏÚÀÌ ¸¹´Ù´Â ¿ë»ê¿¡ °¬´Ù. If I talked to an American, could any American really understand my English? What if he couldn't get it? After imagining the stars, I went to Yongsan, where there were a lot of U.S. soldiers on Sunday. It really was. It was like watching a movie. It¡¯s because many U.S. soldiers were seen walking along the streets. The sight of the U.S. military scared me and lost my guts. I was squatting on one end of the road and practicing my own question sentence over and over again. The shortest, easiest, and most confident sentence was this. "What time is it?" But what was still disturbing was what if the U.S. soldier didn't catch my English. It happened that an American soldier was approaching. I was encouraged. I asked him without even saying hello. "What time is it?" "It's twelve thirty." Wowooo! He got it! As soon as he heard me, he immediately looked at his watch, said, "It's twelve thirty," and then gone with a smile. ³ª´Â À̶§ÀÇ ±â»Ý°ú ÀڽۨÀÌ ³» ÀλýÀ» ¿ÏÀüÈ÷ ¹Ù²ã³õÀ» ù ´ÜÃß°¡ µÉ ÁÙÀº Á¤¸» ¸ô¶ú´Ù. »ýÀü óÀ½ ¹Ì±¹Àο¡°Ô ¸»À» °Ç³× ºÃ°í, ¶Ç ¹Ì±¹ÀÎÀÌ ³» ¸»À» ¹Ù·Î ¾Ë¾Æ µé¾ú´Ù´Â »ç½ÇÀÌ ³Ê¹«³ª ½Å±âÇؼ ÀáÀ» ¸ø Àä´Ù°í Çصµ °ú¾ðÀÌ ¾Æ´Ï´Ù. ¼¼»óÀ» ´Ù ¾òÀº ±âºÐÀ̾ú´Ù. ´õ °ÇÑ ÀڽۨÀÌ »ý°å´Ù. ¿µ¾î °øºÎ¸¦ ´õ ¿½ÉÈ÷ Çß´Ù. ´ç½Ã¿£ ¸¶Æ÷ µµÈµ¿¿¡ µ¿½Ã»ó¿µ(µÎ Æí)À» ÇÏ´Â °æº¸±ØÀåÀÌ ÀÖ¾ú´Ù. ¹Ì±¹¿µÈ¸¦ »ó¿µÇÏ´Â ³¯(ÀÏ¿äÀÏ)¿£ ±×°÷¿¡ °¡¼ °ÅÀÇ ÇÏ·ç Á¾ÀÏ ¾É¾Æ¼ ¹Ýº¹ ºÃ´Ù. ¾Ë¾Æ µéÀ» ¼ö ÀÖ´Â ¿µ¾î´ë»çÓæÞò°¡ ³ª¿À±æ ±â´ëÇϸé¼. ¾î¼´Ù ÇÑ ¸¶µð°¡ ±Í¿¡ Æ÷ÂøµÇ¸é ±×°ÍÀ» ¹Ýº¹Çϸç Á¾ÀÌ¿¡ Àû¾ú´Ù. ±×¾ß¸»·Î ´«ÀÌ ¹ø½ ±Í°¡ ¹ø½ ¶ßÀÌ´Â ¼ø°£À̾ú´Ù. ±× ¶§ÀÇ »ÑµíÇÑ ±âºÐ°ú º¸¶÷Àº ±Û½ê ¹¹¶ó°í ÇÒ±î. ³²¸ô·¡ ¹è¿ì¸é¼ ÇϳªÇϳª ¸ô¶ú´ø °ÍÀ» ¾Ë°Ô µÉ ¶§ÀÇ ³»Àû Èñ¿°¨ýìæíÊï? It's no exaggeration to say that I couldn't sleep because I was so surprised that I had spoken to an American for the first time in my life and that he understood me right away. I've got more stronger confidence. I studied English harder. Back then, there¡¯s Kyongbo theater in Dohwa-dong Mapo where two movies were shown at a time. On Sunday, I went there and watched it over and over again. I kept looking forward to seeing English lines that I could understand. When a word happened to be caught in my ear, I repeated it and wrote it down on my paper. My joy at the time was like my inner satisfaction and triumph when I learned secretly that I didn't know one by one. ¾î´À ³¯ ³ª´Â ¼¿ï¿ª ¾Õ¿¡ °¡¸é ¾î´À °Ç¹°¿¡¼ ¹Ì±ºÀÌ ¹«·á·Î ¿µ¾îȸȸ¦ °¡¸£ÃÄÁÖ´Â °÷ÀÌ ÀÖ´Ù´Â ¸»À» µé¾ú´Ù. ³·¿¡´Â ÀÏÇÏ°í Àú³á¿£ Çб³¿¡ °¡¾ß Ç߱⿡ ÀÏ¿äÀÏÀÌ µÅ¼¾ß ¼¿ï¿ª ¾ÕÀÇ ±×°÷À» ã¾Æ°¬´Ù. ½ÇÁ¦·Î ÀÖ¾ú´Ù. ¿À´Ã³¯ ´ë¿ìºôµù ¿·ÀÇ ³²´ë¹® °æÂû¼ ÁÖº¯À̾ú´Ù. At last, I made up my mind to go to America to make my dream come true(earning money). I first quit night middle school (after taking the qualification exam, entered college -> graduate school -> leaving for studying in the U.S.). Because I decided at that time that I needed more English skills than middle school graduation. From then on, I went to Seoul Station instead of school in the evening when I finished my work. It was much more fun and energized than going to school. At that time, transportation from Shinsu-dong to Seoul Station was not as numerous or diverse as it is today. In order to save time, I had to change trains and buses, but I ran for most of the distance to save money. Strangely, I¡¯ve never felt being tired. As such, I learned Spoken American English very hard from the kind Am GIs. One day, a few months later, I happened to see an ad on a wall around Seoul Station. It¡®s a big ad to me. It¡¯s a job immigration ad in the U.S. by Samsung immigration office. I went to this office on my day off. The place was in front of City Hall, around the Plaza Hotel today, in a small two-story building. When I looked into the office, there were many people who came to consult the staff. I gave up going in, instead looked at a job description on the wall. It ranged from carpentry to cook. The job that caught my eyes among them was a refrigerator repairman. I made up my mind right away to learn it. I started going to the refrigeration technology academy in Dongdaemun instead of Seoul Station in the evening. There were many foreign languages such as English names in the technology textbooks, but it didn¡¯t bother me at all. That means I¡¯ve already begun to benefit from English in practical life. After six months, the result was in vain. The reason was that if I wanted to get a job normally, I first had to wait three years because I was too young. Back then, everything worked well with brokers. But I thought it didn¡¯t agree with me. So I decided to forget about it for a while. ±×·¸´Ù°í Àý¸ÁÇÑ °Ç ¾Æ´Ï¾ú´Ù. Soon after, I opened more shops such as selling TV sets, electric things, stationery, and a record shop. Just a few years ago, I used to carry icecakes and sell it here. Now I came back here as a teenager boss. At last, I was relieved of my love for money. It¡®s a rather awkward expression, but when I made my target amount of money, I soon realized the ambivalence of money. I also vaguely learned that money was not worth pursuing for my life. Then I soon lost my obsession with money and charm. When I was out of horrible poverty, there was another desire for knowledge that I had before. I started to read various books including English study. It was fun, much more rewarding than making money. In fact, I think I already knew some of my personality and ability at this time. Had no such thing as an entrepreneurship, nor had a natural spirit of being entertained when I help others unconditionally. It was just a personal desire to fight poverty. Only for this, self-sufficiency was enough to solve it. I came to think that big money was needed only for competent businessmen and those who really love to help others. Since then I've been trying not to have more than I need. Felt much easier. ¾ÏÆ°, ÇÑ ¶§³ª¸¶, ³»°¡ ±×Åä·Ï ºÎ·¯¿öÇß´ø ½º¸± ³ÑÄ¡´Â ³îÀÌ ¹®Èµµ Áñ°å´Ù. Two more years have passed. At that time, there was a curfew. One rainy night, it was in the middle of a night when the curfew came near. As I was going home over the Shinchon hill, I could see a tall man and two very short boys beating each other with umbrellas at a distance of 40 to 50 meters in front of me. At that time, there were still many accidents around Shinchon, especially at night.. It turned out that they were not fighting each other, but playing games that didn't require words. It was a very strange scene for me. In the middle of the night, a tall foreigner was alone playing with children in a strange neighborhood. It was amazing. I was curious, too. So, I asked foreigners boldly because I had some confidence in myself to speak in English.. ¡°½Ç·ÊÁö¸¸ ¹«½¼ ÀÏÀÌ »ý°å³ª¿ä?¡± ¡°¹®Á¦°¡ ¹º°¡¿ä?
