Every day, in every way…
The idea of progress has a long history, but it started to flower in the 17th century. Enlightenment thinkers believed that man emancipated by reason would rise to ever greater heights of achievement. The many manifestations of his humanity would be the engines of progress: language, community, science, commerce, moral sensibility and government. Unfortunately, many of those engines have failed.
Some supposed sources of progress now appear almost quaint. Take language: many 18th-century thinkers believed that superstitions and past errors were imprinted in words. "Hysteria", for example, comes from the Greek for "womb", on the mistaken idea that panic was a seizure of the uterus. Purge the language of rotten thinking, they believed, and truth and reason would prevail at last. The impulse survives, much diminished, in the vocabulary of political correctness. But these days few people outside North Korea believe in language as an agent of social change.
Every time someone tells you to "be realistic" they are asking you to compromise your ideals. Other sources of progress are clothed in tragedy. The Germanic thought that individual progress should be subsumed into the shared destiny of a nation, or volk, is fatally associated with Hitler. Whenever nationalism becomes the chief organising principle of society, state violence is not far behind. Likewise, in Soviet Russia and Communist China unspeakable crimes were committed by the ruling elite in the pursuit of progress, rather as they had been in the name of God in earlier centuries. As John Passmore, an Australian philosopher, wrote: "men have sought to demonstrate their love of God by loving nothing at all and their love for humanity by loving nobody whatsoever."

B. 大義(대의)
매일 每事(매사)에
진보의 사상은 긴 역사를 가지고 있지만 17세기에 와서야 꽃이 피기 시작하였다. 계몽주의사상가들은 理性(이성)으로 해방된 인간은 성취의 고지에 도달할 것이라고 믿었었다. 인간성을 명시하는 많은 것들이 -언어, 공동체, 과학, 상업, 도덕적 감수성과 정부-발전의 엔진이 될 것이라고 믿었었다. 불행하게도 지금까지 그 엔진 중에서 많은 것이 실패하였다.
일부 사람들은 진보의 원천은 이제 거의 珍奇(진기)한 것이 된 것처럼 보인다고 생각한다. 언어를 생각해보자. 18세기의 많은 사상가들은 미신과 과거의 오류는 單語(단어) 속에 흔적을 남기고 있다고 믿었다. 예를 들어서, womb(자궁)을 의미하는 그리스 語 hysteria는 당황하게 되는 것은 자궁의 발작 때문이라는 잘 못된 인식에 基源(기원)한다. 타락한 사상의 언어를 정화시키면 결국 진리와 이성이 승리할 것이라고 그들은 믿었었다. 그들의 영향은 매우 줄어들었지만 정치적 관행에서 아직도 살아있다. 그러나 오늘 날 北韓(북한) 외의 지역에서 사회적 변화의 요인으로 언어를 믿는 사람은 거의 없다.
누군가가 당신에게 “현실적이 되어라”라고 말할 때 마다, 당신의 이상을 타협하라고 당신에게 요구하고 있는 것이다. 진보의 다른 원천은 비극 속에 포함되어 있다. 개인의 진보는 민족의 공동운명 속에 포함되어야 한다는 독일적 사상은 Hitler와 운명적으로 연결 된다. 민족주의가 사회의 주된 조직원리가 되면 국가폭력이 뒤따르기 마련이다. 마찬가지로, 소련과 공산중국에서는 以前(이전) 시대에 神의 이름으로 그랬던 것처럼 진보의 추구과정에서 말로 다할 수 없는 범죄가 국가 지배계급에 의해서 恣行(자행)되었다. 호주의 철학자 John Passmore가 쓴 것처럼: “인류는 아무것도 사랑하지 않으면서 神의 사랑을, 그리고 아무도 전혀 사랑하지 않으면서 인간에 대한 사랑을 나타내려고 시도해왔다.”
