하루 일과를 마친 24일 저녁 광화문 광장 이순신 장군 동상 앞을 잠시 둘러보았다. 충무공을 능멸이라도 할 작정으로 이곳은 모 후보 진영이 매일 같이 진을 치고 있는 장소다.

모 후보가 누구라고 밝히면 선거법 위반이 될 것 같아 실명을 거론하지 않겠다.

이날 문제의 모 후보 캠프 사람들은 현장에 없었다. 자동차와 스피커만 흉물처럼 남아 있었다. “기호 X번 XXX후보”가 자동으로 나오는 대형 스피커 소리는 지나가는 행인들의 눈살을 찌푸리게 만들었다. 관광 중인 외국인들은 영문을 몰라 주위를 두리번거렸다.

근무 교대를 위해 현장에서 경찰서로 복귀하는 두 명의 경찰관의 대화를 우연히 듣게 됐다. 이들의 대화를 잊어버리기 전에 독자들에게 그대로 전하고자 한다.

■ 경찰A: 아니~ 저X의 유세차는 도로교통법으로는 엄연히 불법인데, 선거기간이기 때문에 선거법으로는 문제가 안 된다니, 이런 법이 세상에 어디 있어? 경찰생활 하면서 이런 선거는 처음 본다니까?

■ 경찰B: 나라가 망조가 들어서 그래.

■ 경찰A: 욕은 우리 경찰이 다 먹고, 영문도 모르는 지나가는 시민들은 불편하다 하고, 이번 선거 빨리 끝나야 돼! 경찰하고 시민들이 무슨 죄야!

스트레스가 머리끝까지 차오른 두 경찰관은 지나가는 행인들에게 자신들의 고충을 들으라는 것처럼 큰 소리로 대화를 나누면서 경찰서로 복귀했다.

서울시 경찰들의 말 못할 고충이 그대로 전달됐다. 이순신 장군 동상 앞 선거유세차에서 들려오는 “기호 X번 XXX후보” 소리는 시청역으로 갈 때까지 쩌렁쩌렁 귀를 울렸다.

미국의 프랭클린 아담스는 “선거란 누구를 뽑기 위해서가 아니라 누구를 뽑지 않기 위해 투표하는 것”이라고 했고, 아브라함 링컨은 “투표용지(Ballot)는 탄환(Bullet)보다 강하다"고 했다. 해충의 박멸을 위해서라도 후보를 제대로 '조준'해야 할 것이다.

조준하지 않고 발사한 탄환은 쇳덩어리에 불과하다. 유권자가 가진 한 표는 약할 수 있어도 그가 신중하게 선택해 행사한 한 표가 서울의 미래를 결정하게 될 것이다.
