헨리 여권 지수(The Henley Passport Index)에서 최근 발표한 세계 여권 랭킹에 따르면 1위는 일본, 2위는 싱가포르, 3위는 한국과 독일이었다. 이 순위는 비자 없이 입국할 수 있는 나라 수를 기준으로 한 것이다. 북한은 꼴찌에서 여덟 번째이다.

  등수가 가장 많이 오른 나라는 UAE로서 2006년엔 62등(무비자 입국 가능국가 35개국)에서 올해는 16등(173개국)으로 뛰었다. 에미레이트 항공(항공기 232대, 취항지 142곳)과 두바이 공항은 세계최고 수준이고 작년엔 이스라엘과 수교하는 등 개방정책을 펴고 있다. 세계 랭킹에서 한국은 최상위권, 북한은 최하위권에 드는 경우가 많다. 그 차이는 인종이 달라서도, 기후가 달라서도 아니다. 정치제도가 달라서이다.
