당대에 이런 이변을 보다니. 내 어릴 적 1950~60년대에는 가난의 시대였다. 의식주 해결이 될 리 없었다. 조그만 방 하나에서 엄마 아버지 형 누나 동생 등 적게는 대여섯 많게는 일곱 여덟이 먹고 잤다. 대가족이었다. 가난한 농경 시대의 연속이었다. 논 한 마지기 사느니 입을 하나 더는 게 낫다고 할 정도였다. 실제로 그랬다. 누나들은 식모로 공순이로 무작정 상경했다. 형들 역시 밥만 먹여주면 어디든 감지덕지하며 달려갔다. 그런 시대를 살았다. 미국 원조 없이는 정부든 국민이든 생존 자체가 불가능했다. 미국 외 필리핀을 포함 태국 에티오피아 콜롬비아 등 수많은 나라가 우리를 음으로 양으로 도왔다.

당시 한국인은 가능한 한 임금을 많이 주는 외국으로 수단과 방법을 가리지 않고 나갔다. 나도 그중 하나였다. 1960년대 말, 미국으로 기술 이민을 가기 위해 영어와 전기 기술을 배웠지만 실패했다. 세상은 변했다. 오늘날 대한민국에 미국인을 포함 수많은 서구인과 동남아 사람들이 한국에 와서 일한다. 필리핀 여성들이 가사도우미(한국식 표현으로 식모) 로 한국에 온다는 양 정부의 공식 발표를 최근의 신문에서 봤다. 격세지감을 느낀다. 적어도 나에겐 그렇다. 꿈 속에 사는 것 같다. 부디 이 꿈이 오래 가기를…

What I’m thinking of 4 –It’s like a dream

It's like a dream for me to have observed such a great event in Korea. According to a recent story, the Korean and Philippine governments have achieved an agreement on the pay that Filipino women receive for babysitting in Korean homes. It reminds me of my youth in the 1950s and 1960s. We were so destitute at the time that we had no alternative but to travel where we might get money. We were all impoverished Koreans at the time. Even then, the Philippines, Thailand, Ethiopia, and Colombia surpassed Korea.

Poor Koreans went to prosperous countries to earn as much money as possible. I was one of them. In the late 1960s, I learned English and electrical technology in order to get a job in the USA in vain. Today, ironically, more Westerners and Southeast Asians are coming to Korea to work. What struck me the most was the fact that Filipinos head to Korea to work as housekeepers. I saw an official announcement in a recent newspaper saying that the two nations had achieved an agreement on employment immigration. This is a tremendous development that has astounded the world. I feel like I'm in a dream. I hope my fantasy lasts as long as possible.
