오늘은 참 특이한 친구를 만났다. 그는 50대의 브라질계 스페인인데 중국 쿤밍에서 22년을 살았단다. 그는 쿤밍에서 중국인 부인과 수입품 가게를 운영하면서 잘 살았다. 취급 품목은 스페인에서 수입한 포도주와 ‘하몽’. 주로 중산층을 상대했으며 수입도 좋았다고. 그런데 코로나 시기를 거치면서 중국의 경제가 망가지기 시작했고, 게다가 작년부터 중국의 반 스파이법이 시행되면서 외국인을 보는 시선이 좋지 않아 결국 혼자 탈출했단다. 웃으며 얘기하기에 농담인 줄 알았는데 사실이었다.
나도 중국 여행을 많이 했지만 습근평이 집권한 후론 안 간다고 했더니, 이 친군 곧 눈치를 채고 내 말에 동의한다며 고개를 끄덕였다. 쿤밍에 오래 살았다기에 내가 중국 여행 중(2005) 쿤밍에서 처음 체험한 버섯식당에 대해 말했더니 그는 곧 알아차렸다. 내가 갔던 식당은 버섯 종류가 50가지가 넘었다. 넓은 진열대에 그 많은 버섯을 이름과 함께 큰 용기에 각각 담아 뒀다. 구운 것, 푹 삶은 것, 약간 데친 것, 무친 것, 볶은 것, 튀긴 것, 버섯 죽, 버섯 수프, 말린 것….그리고 취향에 따라 직접 버섯을 선택해 샤부샤부 해 먹거나, 한약재를 추가하거나 자유였다.
나는 내 눈에 익숙한 버섯 대여섯 종류 이상은 안 먹었다고 했다. 이 친구는 내 말뜻을 아는 듯했다. 내가 중국 것은 다 짝퉁이라고 했더니 미소만 짓고 있었다. 이는 현지인은 물론 중국에 오래 산 사람은 부정할 수 없는 사실이었다. 예를 들자면 한둘이 아니다. 어쨌든 그도 인정했지만, 중국인들의 자기들 식품에 대한 불신은 보통이 아니다. 중산층은 말할 것도 없지만 웬만하면 중국산 식품은 피한다. 이 친구가 스페인에서 직수입한 포도주와 하몽도 그래서 잘 팔렸다는 것이다. 나 역시 스페인 여행 중 ‘하몽’만큼은 특히 안달루시아에서 직접 구입해 먹을 때가 제일 좋았다.
중국에 정착하게 된 동기를 물었더니 그 이유 또한 재미있었다. 고등학교 졸업 후, 세계 최고의 하몽을 생산하는 남부에 있는 하부고(Jabugo in Andalucia)의 어느 회사에 취업했다. 어느 날 중국의 유명 관광지인 계림으로 시장 조사차 출장을 갔다. 계림 경치에 반해 그곳에 주저앉았고, 거기서 중국인 여자를 만났고 곧 그녀의 고향인 쿤밍으로 와 정착했다는 것. 처가댁 12명 식구를 먹여 살릴 정도로 열심히 했단다. 습근평이 모든 것을 바꿔놓았다. 떠날 때가 온 것이다. 그는 최소의 비용만 챙겨 미련 없이 홀로 쿤밍을 떠났단다.
그는 지금 태국인 친구와 함께 태국 곳곳을 여행 중이며 태국에 정착할 제2의 장소를 물색 중이란다. 시종일관 미소를 잃지 않고 나와 대화를 나눈 그와 그의 태국 친구는 뭔가 모를 그들만의 멋진 세상이 있어 보였다. 그들의 행운을 빈다. (* 이 친구들의 부탁으로 사진 얼굴을 가렸습니다.)

People met on my backpacking 184 - A Spanish guy's amazing tale of life in China
Today, I met an unusual guy. He was in his fifties, Brazilian-Spanish, had lived in Kunming, China, for 22 years. He made a nice income owning an import store in Kunming with his Chinese wife. His handling of the goods included wine from Spain and 'Hamon'. He mostly worked with the middle class and made big money. However, during the COVID-19 outbreak, China's economy began to decline. In addition, he ultimately escaped alone when China's anti-spy law went into force last year. I assumed it was a joke since he spoke with a smile but it was true.
Informed him that I had visited China several times before, but that I had stopped visiting there once Xi assumed control. He agreed with me. I told him about the mushroom restaurant I first visited in Kunming on my 2005 trip to China. He instantly understood my message. The restaurant I went to has over 50 different types of mushrooms. They placed each of those mushrooms in a bowl labeled with their names on a large display stand. Baked, boiled, slightly blanched, fried, mushroom porridge, mushroom soup, dried... I was free to pick mushrooms, make shabu-shabu, or add herbal remedies to my liking.
Told him I had only eaten five or six types of mushrooms that I was familiar with. He appeared to understand what I was saying. When I told him that everything in China was fake, he smiled. This is exactly what I heard from the Chinese. Anyway, the Chinese people had a profound mistrust of their own cuisine. China's middle class frequently avoids Chinese food. That's why the wine and jamon he brought directly from Spain to Kunming sold so well. During my trip to Spain, I enjoyed Hamon the most when I bought it myself, particularly in Andalusia.
When I asked him what inspired him to settle in China, his response was also fascinating. After graduating from high school, he worked for a firm in southern Andalucia that manufactured the world's greatest Hamong. One day, he went on a market survey in Guilin, a popular tourist destination in China. He fell in love with the landscape of Guilin, met a Chinese woman there, and eventually moved in Kunming, her hometown. He worked hard enough to feed his wife and her twelve family members. Xi altered everything. The moment has come to depart. He left Kunming without regrets and with the fewest expenditures.
He is now traveling around Thailand with a Thai friend and looking for a second place to settle in Thailand. Having talked to me constantly without losing their smiles, he and his Thai friend seemed to have a wonderful world of their own, something I didn't know. I wish them all the best.
