4) 바티칸(교황청)은 영토(領土) 등 외적 규모에 있어서는 세계에서 가장 작은 小國에 속한다. 그러나 內的 歷史性(역사성)은 세계에서 가장 큰 나라다. 바티칸 전체 그 자체가 수천 년의 역사요 곧 거대한 박물관이니까. 우선 성베드로 광장 한 가운데 우뚝 서 있는 오벨리스크부터가 슬픈 역사의 산 징표(徵標)다. 이는 악명 높은 로마의 3대 황제 칼리굴라에 의해 희생된 수많은 기독교 순교자(殉敎者)들의 추모비와 같다. 또한 성베드로 성당 내에는 세상에서 가장 아름다운 작품이라고 공인된 미켈란젤로의 대표작 '피에타 상'이 있고, 아르놀포디 캄비오의 '베드로의 청동 좌상' 등 세계적 걸작품(傑作品)들이 한 둘이 아니다..

그러나 여기선 바티칸 박물관 내의 성시스턴 소성당(小聖堂)에 대해서만 얘기하기로 한다. 바로 이곳에 미켈란젤로는 물론 브라만테, 라파엘 보티첼리 등 大家들의 그림들이 다 모여 있기 때문이다. 특히 그 유명한 미켈란젤로의 대작 '천장화'를 보면 감탄을 하다못해 곧 환상(幻想)에 빠지고 만다. 색상이 살아 있고 얼굴 표정 하나하나, 손끝 발끝 아니 머리카락 하나 하나까지도 전부 살아 숨쉬며 움직이고 있다. 잠시 넋을 잃고 구경하다 보면 곧 절로 고개가 숙여지고 만다. 고개가 아파서이기도 하지만 그 보다는 먼저 그 작품을 완성하기까지의 약 5년이란 긴 세월을 천정에 매달려 자신의 투혼(鬪魂)을 불살랐던 천재 화가 미켈란젤로의 사명감에 경의를 표하기 위해서다..

 내게 있어 '천정화'의 여러 장면들 가운데 가장 인상적인 것은 '창조주'가 '아담'의 손끝을 통해 '생명의 혼'을 불어넣는 '아담의 창조' 장면이었다. 그 외 감동적인 작품들도 많다. 벽화로 남아 있는 '최후의 심판' '모세의 일생' '예수의 일생'등이 그렇고 라파엘의 명화 등도 그렇다. 이처럼 우리 夫婦는 그동안 미술 책이나 달력 등 화보에서나 보았던 천재들의 작품들을 바로 그들이 직접 작업을 했던 바로 그 장소에서 그리고 또 그 자리에 그대로 남아 있는 그 천재들의 작품들을 직접 보았던 것이다. 행운이었다. 그때의 깊은 감동과 기쁨은 우리의 마음 속 깊이 남아 있다...

This is because there are all the paintings of Michelangelo as well as the paintings of the masters such as Brahmante and Raphael Botticelli. In particular, the famous Michelangelo's "A Painting On The Ceiling" is not admired and soon falls into a fantasy. The color is alive, and every single facial expression, every one of his fingertips, every hair is moving alive and breathing. As soon as I am looking for a moment, I will be bowed with my head. It‘s not because my head is sick, but to pay tribute to the devotion of Michelangelo, a genius painter who had burnt his soul for a long time, about five years before his work was completed, rather than hanging on the ceiling..

One of the most impressive scenes of 'A Painting On The Ceiling' for me was the 'Creation of Adam' scene, where 'Creator' infuses 'The Soul of Life' through the fingertips of 'Adam'. There are many other impressive works. The murals are the last Judgment, the life of Moses, the life of Jesus, and so on. In this way, we have seen the works of the geniuses that we have seen in paintings such as art books and calendars, and the works of those geniuses that have remained in the same place where they directly worked. It was fortunate. The deep emotion and joy of that time remains deep in our hearts...

5) 에르미타주 박물관은 러시아의 북부 상트 페테르부르크에 있다. 우리 夫婦의 러시아 배낭여행 중 빼놓을 수 없는 곳은 바로 이곳이다. 이 박물관은 예카테리나 2세(1729 -1796, 러시아의 여황제)의 개인적 미술품 콜렉션을 전시하면서 시작되었다. 실은 당시의 러시아는 문명을 앞서가는 유럽과는 달리 예술은 물론 전반적으로 후진국에 속했다. 그러나 이때 등장한 독일 출신 예카테리나 2세는 달랐다. 그녀는 유럽의 예술 문화를 전승(傳承)하고자 과감히 개인 화랑(畵廊)을 열었다. 이를 계기로 예카테리나 시대에는 유럽 각국으로부터 적극적으로 미술품들을 매입하기 시작했다. 그리고 곧 수천 점의 미술품을 소장하기에 이른다. 그 중에는 영국 월폴 수상과 프랑스 황후 조세핀의 것도 포함되어 있었다고 하니 그녀의 미술품에 대한 열정이 어느 정도였는지 짐작이 가고도 남는다. 그러나 이것도 잠시, 러시아의 예술 문화 발전은 예카테리나 2세 후 등극한 니콜라이(1796-1855) 1세 황제와 함께 사양(斜陽)길로 접어들고 만다. 그에게 있어 미술품 따위는 별 의미가 없었기 때문이다. 그는 곧 그동안 수집해 온 1,000여 점 모두를 경매 처분해 버렸다.

이처럼 한 국가의 운명(運命)은 물론 문화 수준 역시 어떤 지도자를 두었느냐에 따라 살기도 하고 죽기도 하는 것이다. 다행히 오늘날의 에르미타주는 완전히 달라졌다. 1922년에 국립 에르미타주 미술 박물관으로 지정된 후 1,000여 개의 방에 다빈치, 피카소, 미켈란젤로, 라파엘로, 루빈슨, 고갱, 고호, 르느와르 등의 눈부신 명화들이 총집결(總集結)해 있기 때문이다. 뿐만 아니다. 이태리 로마 현지의 조각품과 이집트의 미라와 고대 화폐 그리고 고대 메달과 장신구 등 고대에서 현대에 이르는 병기(兵器)까지 약 300만 점의 소장품을 갖춘 세계적 박물관으로 재탄생(再誕生)했다. 물론 건물 자체도 유럽의 여타 어느 박물관 못지않다. 아니 더 호화롭고 기품 있는 방들도 많았다. 우리 夫婦는 러시아 여행 중 에르미타주 박물관 외 모스크바와 이르쿠츠크 그리고 바이칼 호수를 돌면서 민속 박물관과 중소 국립 박물관들을 많이 봤다. 나름대로 특징이 다 있었으나 그래도 역시 에르미타주 박물관이 가장 인상적(印象的)이었다.

5) The Hermitage Museum is located in the northern part of Russia, St. Petersburg. It‘s the place that we can’t miss during our Russian backpacking trip. The museum began with a collection of personal art collections by Catherine II (1729-1796, Russian Emperor). However, Catherine ll, who came from Germany at that time, were different. She opened her private gallery to pass on European art culture. As a result, in the era of Catherine ll, Europe began actively purchasing art objects. And soon to have a collection of thousands of art objects. Some of them include the British Wallpapers and the French Empress Josephine, so I guessed how passionate about her artwork was. However, for a while, the development of art and culture in Russia was going along with the 1st generation Emperor Nikolai (1796-1855) who settled after Catherine's second generation. For him, art was not meaningful. He soon auctioned out all 1,000 stores he had collected.

As such, the destiny of a nation, as well as the level of culture, depends on what leaders have been put in place. Fortunately, today's state of Hermitage is completely different. In 1922, the museum was designated as the National Museum of Fine Arts, and more than 1,000 rooms have been assembled with spectacular masterpieces such as Da Vinci, Picasso, Michelangelo, Raphael, Rubinson, Gauguin, Koho and Renoir. Not only that. It was reborn as a world museum with a collection of some 3 million items ranging from ancient sculptures in Italy, Egyptian mummies, ancient money, ancient medals and ornaments to ancient and contemporary arsenals. Of course, the building itself is no different than any museum in Europe. There were many more luxurious and elegant rooms. During our(my wife and me)trip to Russia, we saw a lot of folk museums and small and medium national museums around Moscow, Irkutsk and Lake Baikal as well as the Hermitage Museum, Yes. The Hermitage Museum was still the most impressive to us.
