미국 국방장관이 중국의 위협에 맞서기 위한 한국 등 역내 동맹국과의 협력 의지를 재확인했습니다. 미국 혼자서는 중국을 억제할 수 없으며 홀로 하지도 않을 것이라고 강조했습니다. 안소영 기자가 보도합니다.

피트 헤그세스 국방장관은 13일 중국 억지를 위해 한국과 일본, 호주, 필리핀 등 역내 동맹국들과의 협력을 지속해 나갈 것이라는 점을 분명히 했습니다.

[헤그세스 국방장관]“That's why a lot of my first phone calls as Secretary of Defense were to Pacific allies to Australia, to Japan, to South Korea, to the Philippines and others and will continue because that just as this alliance in Europe is critical, working by with and through allies and partners in that region who understand the reality of the ascendant Chinese threat will be critical. It can't be America alone it won't be America alone if we are to deter that.”

헤그세스 국방장관은 이날 벨기에 브뤼셀에서 열린 북대서양조약기구(NATO·나토) 국방장관 회의 후 열린 기자회견에서 관련 질문을 받고 “유럽에서의 이 동맹(나토)이 중요하듯 중국의 점증하는 위협의 현실을 이해하는 해당(인도태평양) 역내 동맹 및 파트너와 협력하는 것도 매우 중요하다”고 말했습니다.

헤그세스 장관은 국방장관으로 취임한 후 첫 통화를 한 것도 호주와 일본, 한국, 필리핀 등의 동맹이었다는 점을 상기하며 이같이 전했습니다. 그러면서 “이를(중국의 위협) 억지하려면 미국 혼자서는 안 되며, 홀로 하지도 않을 것”이라고 강조했습니다.

<“인태서 억지력 효과는 미국만 주도 가능”>

헤그세스 국방장관은 “(인도) 태평양 지역에서의 억지력 효과는 미국이 주도할 수밖에 없다”며 유럽 국가들, 나토 동맹국들이 안보와 관련한 재정적 기여를 확대해야 한다고 촉구했습니다.

[헤그세스 국방장관]“It also makes sense comparatively and geographically for the United States along with allies in the Pacific like Japan and South Korea and the Philippines and Australia and others to also invest in allies and partners and capabilities in the Pacific to project power there in service of deterrence. That deterrent effect in the Pacific is one that really can only be led by the United States.”

아울러 헤그세스 장관은 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 시진핑 중국 국가주석과의 강력한 관계를 표명한 것과 관련해선, “우리는 중국과의 갈등을 추구하지 않기 때문에 트럼프 대통령이 시 주석과 좋은 관계를 유지하고 있다”고 설명했습니다.

한편 마크 뤼터 나토 사무총장은 이날 나토 국방장관 회의에 앞서 기자들과 만난 자리에선 “북대서양 및 유럽 대서양 지역에서 일어나는 일과 인도태평양에서 발생하는 일들이 서로 연결돼 있다”고 말했습니다.

[뤼터 사무총장]“It also involves North Korea, China, Iran, so there is an interconnection now between what happens in the North Atlantic and in the Euro-Atlantic area on the one hand, but also in the Indo-Pacific on the other hand. And that means that all these theaters are getting intertwined.”

뤼터 사무총장은 러시아의 우크라이나 침략 전쟁에 북한과 중국, 이란도 관여하고 있다며 이같이 말했습니다.
