3. Latin Words in English - (영어에서 사용하는 라틴語)
라틴어 단어들이 문어체나 구어체 영어에서 많이 사용되고 있으며 간결하고 아주 적절한 표현의 묘미를 더해주고 있다. 그 중에서 중요한 것들을 추려서 소개하면 아래와 같다.



Ad hoc - 특별한 목적을 위한 임시의, 일시적인, 즉흥적인
A committee was formed ad hoc to discuss the problem of drug addiction in the schools.
(학원 내 마약중독에 대한 문제를 토의하기 위해 임시 특별위원회가 조직되었다.)
To handle the problem, the party formed an ad hoc policy advisory committee.
(그 문제를 다루기 위해 당은 임시 정책자문위원회를 구성했다.)
He wasn't scheduled to speak, but he decided to give an ad hoc speech to the audience.
(일정에는 없었지만, 그는 청중들에게 즉흥연설을 하기로 결심했다.)

ad hominem - 논리적 근거없이 개인을 공격하는, 인신공격의
John couldn't find logical grounds to attack the theory, so he resorted to ad hominem attacks on the professor.
(존은 그 이론을 공격할 논리를 발견하지 못하여, 교수에게 개인적인 공격을 가하기로 했다.)

ad interim - 당분간, 임시의, 잠정적인
First Secretary Jones is now chargé d'affaires ad interim.
(1등 서기관 존스는 지금 임시 대리대사이다.)
The Premier ad interim (임시 수상)
an ad interim report (중간보고)

amicus curiae (friend of the court) - 법정 고문(직접 관계가 없어도 소송에 영향을 미치는)
The organization filed an amicus curiae brief concerning the issue.
(그 조직은 그 사건에 대하여 법정고문사용을 신청했다.)

bona fide - 진실한, 성의 있는, 거짓이 없는 (‘보나 화이드’라고 발음)
He was a bona fide defector from North Korea.
(그는 거짓이 없는 탈북자다.)

bona fides - 진실, 성의, 진심(‘보나 휘데스’라고 발음)
Unless you prove your bona fides we cannot trust you.
(당신이 진실을 입증하지 않는 한 우리는 당신을 믿을 수 없다.)

circa - (전치사로) 대개 언제쯤, 언제 경에
The ancient painting was discovered circa 1885.
(이 고대 그림은 1885년경에 발견됐다.)
This book was published circa 1720.
(이 책은 1720년경에 출판됐다.)

cum laude - 우등생으로 졸업
summa cum laude - 최우등생으로 졸업
magna cum alude - 2등으로 졸업
John graduated from college cum laude [summa cum laude, magna cum laude]
(존은 대학을 우등으로[최우등으로, 2등으로] 졸업했다.)
Not everyone graduates from Harvard summa cum laude.
(아무나 하버드에서 최우등으로 졸업하는 게 아니다.)

curriculum vitae - 이력서(略:CV), 대학이나 기업체에서는 resume 보다 curriculum vitae를 더 많이 사용함
Submit your CV by June 15.
(6월 15일까지 이력서를 제출하시오.)
When you apply for a job, you usually have to submit a CV.
(구직할 때에는 대개 이력서를 내야 한다.)

de facto (in reality or in fact) - 사실상의(법적근거 없이 직무나 기능을 사실상 수행할 때)
a de facto government (사실상의 정부)
a de facto contract (사실상의 계약)
a de facto leader (사실상의 지도자)
a de jure heir - 권리상 법률상 정당한 상속자
There was a de facto taboo against using nuclear weapon in Vietnam.
(월남전에서는 핵무기를 사용하지 않는다는 사실상의 금기가 있었다.)

e.g (exempli gratia = for example) - 예를 들면
A number of nations have opposed that treaty, e.g. Sapin, Russia, and Germany.
(몇 나라들이 그 조약을 반대했다. 예를 들면 스페인, 러시아, 그리고 독일이다.)

et cetera(and so forth - abbreviated as etc.) - 등등 (무엇을 열거할 때 etc 앞에 and를 쓰지 않는다)
People should eat more green vegetables, such as spinach, broccoli, lettuce, etc.
(사람들은 시금치, 브로콜리, 양상추 등 더 많은 녹색 야채들을 먹어야 한다.)

ex officio - 직권, 직위에 의한 당연직
The CEO is chairman of the board ex officio
(최고경영자는 당연직으로 이사회의 회장이 된다.)

ex parte - (법률상으로 또는 편견으로) 당사자의 한쪽에만 치우쳐, 상대방을 무시하고 일방적인 편견, 편향적인
At the court, he testified ex parte.
(법정에서 그는 편향된 증언을 했다.)
It was an ex parte hearing.
(그것은 상대방을 고려하지 않은 편향된 청문이었다.)

ex post facto (after the fact) - 사후의, 과거로 소급해서 (특히 법률에서)
The constitution prohibits ex post facto laws.
(헌법은 소급처벌법을 금지한다.)

flagrante delicto - 현행범으로, 성관계 현장 목격
When the police broke into the apartment, they found the couple in flagrante delicto.
(경찰이 아파트에 쳐들어갔을때 그 두 사람의 성관계 현장을 목격했다.)

i.e (id est = that is) - 즉(문어체에서 사용되지만 때로는 회화에서도 사용됨)
There is an important factor in the economy that we should remember, i.e., the cost of oil.
(경제를 말할 때 우리가 기억해야할 중요한 요소가 있는데, 즉 유가가 그것이다.)

inter alia (among other things) - 그중에서도, 특히
Jim has many talents, inter alia oil painting and music.
(짐은 다재다능하다. 그 중에서도 특히 유화와 음악에 능하다.)

in vino veritas - 취중진심
Frod had a couple drinks and started bad-mouthing his boss. You konw what they say, 'In vino veritas'
(프레드가 술을 두어 잔 마시더니 상관을 욕하기 시작했다. 시람들이 말하는 “취중 진담”이라는 거다.)

modus operandi - (작전방법, 운영방식, 수법 등 어떤 일이나 계획을 추진할 때 사용하는 처리방식. M.O.로 약자만 사용하는 경우도 있다)
In miliraty operations, estasblishg a defensive or offensive plan requires intelligence on the enemy's modus operandi.
(군사작전에서 방어나 공격계획을 세울 때에는 적의 작전방법에 대한 정보를 필요로 하다.)
The first thing the police had to do was to fiqure out the bank robber's. M.O
(경찰이 맨 먼저 해야 하는 일은 은행강도가 어떤 수법을 사용했는지 알아내는 일이었다.)

persona non grata (PNG) - 주재국 정부에서 싫어하는 다른 나라 외교관(동사로도 사용)
He was PNGed from Russia.
(그는 러시아에서 추방됐다.)
The government declared the diplomat PNG.
(정부는 그 외교관을 기피인물로 선언했다.)

post-mortem - 사후의, 검시, 부검, 승부 결정 뒤의 검토, 일이 끝난 뒤의 평가분석
The coroner performed a post-mortem on the body.
(검시관이 시체의 부검을 실시했다.)
It was decided to conduct a post-mortem on failure of the policy.
(그 정책의 실패에 대해서 사후분석을 실시키로 했다.)

pro bono - 무료, 선의로 행해지는, 무료법률상담
The lawyer is working on a pro bono case.
(변호사는 무료로 그 일을 맡고 있다.)

pro forma - 형식상, 임시의, 假(가)-, 견적의
Samsung sent a pro forma invoice to Sony this week and the two companies will sign a pro forma contract next month.
(삼성이 금주에 소니사에 견적송장을 발송했고 두 회사는 다음달에 가계약을 맺는다.)

quid pro quo - 반대급부, 무엇에 대한 무엇
If I agree to your terms, there has to be some kind of quid pro quo, don't you think?
(내가 너의 조건에 동의하지만, 너도 나에게 뭔가 해줘야 되는 것 아니니?)

re(in reference to, concerning) - ~에 관하여
Re your new proposal, we have decided to invite you to Seoul next month.
(당신의 새 제안에 대해서, 우리는 당신을 다음날 서울에 초청키로 결심했습니다.)

status quo - 현상, 현재 상태
The government wants to preserve (maintain) the status quo.
(정부는 현상유지를 원한다.)

status quo ante - 이전의 상태
The lawyer advocated canceling the agreement and restoring the parties to the status quo ante.
(변호사는 그 합의를 취소하고 당사자들을 이전의 상태로 복귀시킬 것을 주장했다.)

status quo antebellum - 전쟁 이전의 상태
The treaty restores the international boundaries to the status quo antebellum.
(그 조약은 당사국들 간의 국경선을 전쟁 이전의 상태로 되돌려놓는다.)

vice versa (do the opposite) - 그 반대로, 거꾸로
The girls in the class ask the questions in the English and the boys answer in Korean, and then vice versa.
(여학생들이 영어로 질문하면 남학생들은 한국말로 대답해라, 다음에는 그 반대로 해라.)

cf(confer) - 비교 (주로 논문에서 무엇과 비교해 보라는 표시)

ibid = ibidem(약자는 ib.) 같은 장소에, 책에 (각주에 같은 장, 절, 항 쪽 등을 표시)

op cit = opere citato - 앞서 말한(인용한) 책 중에 (주로 학술 논문의 각주에 사용)
