11. Love and Hate - 愛憎(애증)에서 전용된 표현

영어에는 단어 love를 사용하는 표현이 수없이 많고 hate를 사용하는 표현은 그렇게 많지 않다. love는 ‘사랑한다’는 뜻이지만 ‘좋아한다’는 의미로 사용되는 경우가 더 많으며 hate는 ‘미워한다’는 뜻이지만 ‘싫어한다’는 의미로도 많이 사용된다. 정확한 뜻은 앞뒤 문맥을 살펴서 해석해야 한다.



all's fair in love and war - 사랑과 전쟁에서는 잘잘못을 따지지 않는다는 말, 네 것 내 것이 어디 있느냐는 표현

John stole my girl and he's not a bit sorry. He says that all's fair in love and war.
(존은 내 여자를 뺏아간 후에도 전혀 미안해 하지 않는다. 그의 말은 사랑과 전쟁에서 뭘 따지냐는 거지.)


fall in love with - 누구와, 무엇과 사랑에 빠지다, 심취하다

How long have you been playing guitar? - I fell in love with the guitar when I was in high school.
(얼마나 오랫동안 기타 연주를 했습니까? 고등학교를 다닐 때부터 기타에 심취했습니다.)
He fell in love with a woman ten years older than him.
(그는 열 살 연상의 여자와 사랑에 빠졌다.)


for the love of Pete/Christ - 제발, 놀라움이나 격분의 표현

Honey, for the love of Pete don't lend your brother any more money.
(여보, 제발 당신 형에게 더 이상 돈을 빌려주지 말아요.)
For the love of Christ, stop drinking and smoking.
(이제 제발 술과 담배 좀 끊어라.)


hate crime - 혐오범죄

All of us think that the rape is a hate crime.
(우리 모두는 강간을 혐오범죄라고 생각한다.)


hate mail - 협박 편지

Someone has been sending hate mail to Harry. He reported it to the police.
(누군가 해리에게 계속 협박편지를 보내왔다. 그는 이것을 경찰에 신고했다.)


hate-monger - 적대감을 부추키는 사람, 선동가, 이간질하는 사람

In this world, there are hate-mongers who try to stir up trouble between ethnic and religious group.
(이 세상에는 인종 간, 그리고 종교 집단 간의 분쟁을 선동하는 자들이 있다.)


hate someone's guts - 누군가를 몹시 미워하다

That guy stole my girl. I hate his guts.
(저 자가 내 여자를 뺏아갔다. 난 그를 몹시 미워한다.)


labor of love - 기뻐서 하는 일, 원해서 하는 일, 무보수 봉사

He spent most of his life writing a book, which was never published. But he said it was a labor of love and was not intended to make money.
(그는 인생의 대부분을 책을 쓰는데 보냈지만 출판되지는 않았다. 그러나 그는 그것이 돈을 벌기 위해서가 아니라 하고 싶어서 하는 일이라고 했다.)


love affair - 애정관계, 情事(정사), 연애사건

Americans have had a love affair with the automobile for almost a century.
(미국인들은 거의 1세기 동안 자동차와의 연애에 빠져 있었다.)
Bill confessed that he had a love affair with his secretary.
(빌은 자기 비서와 애정관계에 있었다고 고백했다.)


love at first sight - 첫눈에 반하다

When he saw her it was love at first sight.
(그는 그녀를 보자 첫눈에 반했다.)
When Tom saw that car, it was love at first sight.
(톰은 그 차를 보고 첫눈에 반했다.)


love-hate relationship - 애증의 관계
She says she has a love-hate relationship with coffee. On the one hand, if she doesn't drink a cup as soon as she gets up, she's sleepy, but when she drinks too much it makes her very nervous and edgy.
(그녀는 커피와 애증관계가 있다고 말 하더군. 아침에 일어나서 안마시면 계속 졸리고 그렇다고 너무 마시면 신경이 예민해지고 날카로워진대.)
People seem to have a love-hate relationship with big SUV's. They love the convenience of them, but they hate the fact that they're gas-guzzlers.

lovers' lane - 후미진 길, 연인들의 밀회장소
The car was parked in a lovers lane and the pair were kissing.
(한 쌍의 연인들이 후미진 곳에 차를 세워놓고 키스를 하고 있었다.)


misery lovers company - 同病相憐(동병상련), 불행한 사람이 같은 처지의 사람을 동정하는 것
Both Mary and Helen are depressed because their boyfriends dumped them, so they are always doing things together. They say that misery loves company.
(매리와 헬렌은 둘 다 남자친구로부터 버림받고 의기소침해 있다. 그래서 그들은 항상 무슨 일이든 같이 한다. 동병상련이다.)
Joe and Jack were fired yesterday, so they drank together last night. Misery loves company.
(조와 잭은 어제 해고되고 밤에 함께 술을 마셨다. 서로 위로하면서.)


no love lost between - 서로 미워하다, 싫어하다
There's no love lost between those two girls. In fact, they hate each other.
(그 두 여자들은 서로 싫어한다. 사실 서로 증오한다.)
There's no love lost between the Republican President and the Democratic Congress.
(공화당 대통령과 민주당이 주도하는 의회는 서로 미워한다.)


not for love or money - 아무리 해도 안 된다, 어떤 방법을 써도 안 된다
It's a terrible job and I wouldn't do it. Not for love or money.
(그건 형편없는 일거리야. 나는 못하겠어. 아무래도 안되겠어.)


puppy love - 풋사랑
The boy was 13 and the girl was 12 but they loved each other very much. People called it puppy love.
(열세 살의 소년과 열두 살의 소녀가 서로 지극히 사랑했다. 사람들은 이걸 풋사랑이라고 부른다.)


Somebody up there likes/loves/hates me - 운이 좋다/매우 좋다/나쁘다 (Somebody up there은 하느님을 뜻함)
I narrowly escaped death in accident. I guess somebody up there likes me.
(나는 그 사고에서 간신히 살아났다. 운이 좋았던 모양이다.)
I can't believe my luck has been so bad. Somebody up there hates me.
(나는 왜 그렇게 재수가 없는지 모르겠다. 운이 나빠.)
