배우 출신인 로널드 레이건은 1964년 10월27일 미국 공화당 후보 배리 골드워터를 위하여 한 방송연설로 유명해졌다. '운명과의 랑데뷰'라는 제목의 이 연설은 레이건의 反共자유주의 신념을 담고 있다. 두 대목만 소개한다.

<만약 우리가 이 전쟁에서 진다면, 그리하여 우리의 자유를 잃게 된다면, 역사는 졌을 경우 잃을 것이 가장 많은 사람들이 패배를 피하기 위하여 가장 적게 행동했다는 것을 가장 놀라운 사실로 기록할 것이다.>

(if we lose that war, and in doing so lose this way of freedom of ours, history will record with the greatest astonishment that those who had the most to lose did the least to prevent its happening.)

서울 강남에 살면서 애국운동에는 무관심한 이들을 가리키는 것 같다.

<나는 左와 右 같은 것은 없다는 점을 말씀 드리려 합니다. 세상에는 上과 下가 있을 뿐입니다. 인류의 오랜 꿈, 법질서와 조화되는 개인의 자유에 대한 절대성까지 오르든지, 개미집 같은 전체주의 체제로 떨어지든지. 그들이 비록 성실하고 인도적 동기를 가졌다고 하더라도 자신들의 안전을 위하여 자유를 팔아먹으려는 자들은 저 下向 코스를 달리고 있는 것입니다.>

(I would like to suggest that there is no such thing as a left or right. There is only an up or down--up to a man's age-old dream, the ultimate in individual freedom consistent with law and order--or down to the ant heap totalitarianism, and regardless of their sincerity, their humanitarian motives, those who would trade our freedom for security have embarked on this downward course.)
