18세기 영국 정치인이자 문필가인 에드먼드 버크는 名言을 많이 남겼다.
1. 과거로써 미래를 설계할 수는 없다(You can never plan the future by the past).
2. 惡들을 너무 미워하다가 보니 인간을 너무 적게 사랑하게 되었다(By hating vices too much, they come to love men too little).
3. 나쁜 법률이야말로 최악의 독재자이다(Bad laws are the worst sort of tyranny).
4. 노예가 아니라 자유가 무정부상태의 치료약이다. 無神論이 아니라 종교가 미신을 치료하듯이 (Freedom and not servitude is the cure of anarchy; as religon, and not atheism, is the true remedy for superstition).
5. 자유를 가질려면 자유의 한계가 있어야 한다(Liberty too must be limited in order to be possessed).
