In 2014, I was honored to meet with several North Korean defectors during an official visit to South Korea. They spoke movingly about the brutality they experienced at the hands of the regime in Pyongyang. For me, that experience was a powerful reminder that every day millions around the world are denied their most basic human rights and robbed of their God-given freedoms. This is especially true for the people of North Korea, who suffer under brutal dictatorship.
2014년에 제가 공식적으로 한국을 방문했을 때 여러 탈북자 분들을 만날 수 있게 되어 영광이었습니다. 평양에서 북한정권 아래 그들이 겪었던 만행들에 대해 들었을 때 그 이야기는 제 마음을 아프게 했습니다. 그들이 겪은 고난들은 가장 기본적인 인권을 유린당하고 하나님께서 주신 자유를 빼앗긴 세계의 수많은 사람들을 선명하게 떠올리게 했습니다. 특별히 잔인한 독재정권 아래에서 고통받고 있는 북한사람들을 생각나게 했습니다.

As Korean Americans celebrate the Korean New Year, I join the many people hoping and praying for the day when those living in North Korea are able to live, work and raise their children free from oppression, starvation and fear. The conditions they endure under an all-controlling dictator are nothing short of horrific. It is difficult to comprehend that in the 21st century, modern day gulags still exist – a fact documented for all the world to see in the United Nations Commission on Inquiry report released three years ago. These crimes against humanity demand justice.
미국에 거주하는 한국인들이 한국 설날을 기념하듯이, 저도 북한주민들이 억압과 굶주림과 공포에서 벗어나 자유롭게 일하고 그들의 자녀들을 키우며 살게 될 그날을 소망하는 많은 사람들과 함께 기도했습니다. 모든 것을 통제하는 독재자 아래에서 그들이 처한 환경은 아주 끔찍하기 그지없었습니다. 21세기 현재에도 강제 노동 수용소가 여전히 존재한다는 것은 이해하기 어려운 일입니다. - 3년 전에 발간된 유엔(UN)위원회의 조사 보고서를 통해 온 세계가 그 사실을 확인할 수 있었습니다. 이러한 반인류적인 범죄에 대해서는 정의가 실현되어야 합니다.

We must continue to be a voice for those in North Korea who cannot speak out. We must keep raising awareness of their daily suffering, and work to end the cycle of such serious human rights violations. Until the people of North Korea are able to live in dignity and enjoy the most fundamental of freedoms, all people must stand in solidarity with them.
우리는 자신의 목소리를 낼 수 없는 북한사람들을 대신하여 지속적으로 목소리를 높여야 합니다. 우리는 그들이 매일 겪는 고통에 대해 계속 인식하고, 심각한 인권침해의 악순환의 고리를 끊기 위해 노력해야 합니다. 북한사람들의 존엄성이 지켜지고, 가장 근본적인 자유를 누리게 될 날까지, 모든 사람들은 그들과 함께 단결해야 합니다.
