[녹취: 폼페오 장관] “President Trump believes that Kim Jong-un has an unprecedented opportunity to change the trajectory of our relationship and bring peace and prosperity to his country. We are hopeful this summit will help set the conditions for future productive talks. In light of how many flimsy agreements the United States has made in previous years, this president will ensure that no potential agreement will fail to adequately address the North Korean threat. The ultimate objective we seek from diplomacy with North Korea has not changed: A complete and verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of the Korea Peninsula is the only outcome that the United States will accept.”

폼페오 장관은 11일 싱가포르에서 기자회견을 열고 트럼프 대통령은 김정은이 미-북 관계의 방향을 바꾸고 북한에 평화와 번영을 가져올 전례 없는 기회를 갖고 있다고 믿는다며 이같이 말했습니다. 아울러 이번 정상회담이 앞으로의 생산적인 대화를 위한 여건을 조성하는 것을 돕길 바란다고 말했습니다.

또한 지난 수 년 동안 미국은 많은 허술한 합의를 했었지만, 트럼프 대통령은 북한의 위협을 적절하게 해결하지 못하는 합의는 하지 않도록 확실히 할 것이라고 덧붙였습니다.

폼페오 장관은 트럼프 대통령이 실질적 진전에 대한 자신감과 긍정적 태도 그리고 열망을 갖고 회담에 임할 것이라고 강조했습니다.

[녹취: 폼페오 장관] “President Trump is going into this meeting with confidence and a positive attitude and eagerness for real progress. He has made it clear that if Kim Jong-un denuclearizes, there is a brighter future for North Korea. Tomorrow, we will get our clearest indication to date of whether Chairman Kim Jong-un truly shares this vision.”

트럼프 대통령은 김정은이 비핵화한다면 북한에 밝은 미래가 있다는 점을 명확히 했다는 겁니다. 이어 김정은 위원장이 이런 비전을 진정으로 공유하고 있는지 여부를 회담이 열리는 내일 확실히 알 수 있을 것이라고 덧붙였습니다. 폼페오 장관은 또 트럼프 대통령이 이번 회담에 완전히 준비돼 있다며 개인적으로 트럼프 대통령이 여러 의견을 많이 듣는 기회를 갖도록 했다고 말했습니다.

I have personally had the opportunity to make sure that he's had a chance to hear lots of different voices, all of the attendant opportunities and risks, and that we have -- we have put -- put these two leaders in the right place.”

이어 이런 의견들에는 기회와 위험 요소들이 포함돼 있다고 설명했습니다. 한편 폼페오 장관은 이날 미국은 북한의 핵무기 프로그램을 폐기할 기술적 역량이 부족하다는 한 언론 보도 내용을 일축했습니다.

[녹취: 폼페오 장관] “Before discussing the summit I want to address a report in The New York Times that suggested that the U.S. team lacks the technical expertise on dismantling North Korea's weapons program as part of these talks. I want to address that report directly. For over three months an interagency working group of over a hundred experts across the government has met multiple times per week to address technical and logistical issues associated with dismantling North Korea's weapons programs.”

지난 3개월 동안 관련 부처에서 100명이 넘는 전문가들이 한 주에도 여러 번씩 만나 북한의 핵무기 프로그램 해체와 관련한 기술적 요소 등을 논의해왔다는 겁니다.
