폼페오 장관은 미국의 목표를 향한 추가적인 외교적 진전을 만들기 위해 다음주 새 국무부 대북정책 특별대표와 북한을 방문할 것이라고 밝혔습니다.

[녹취: 폼페오 장관] “It is very timely moment for Steve to join the team and come onboard. He and I will be traveling to North Korea next week to make further diplomatic progress towards our objective.”

폼페오 장관은 23일 국무부에서 기자회견을 열고 스티븐 비건 포드자동차 국제대정부 부문 부회장이 새로운 대북정책 특별대표로 지명됐다며 이같이 말했습니다. 아울러 비건 특별대표가 미국의 대북 정책을 담당하고 김정은 위원장이 동의한 최종적이고 완전히 검증된 북한의 비핵화라는 트럼프 대통령의 목표를 달성하기 위한 미국의 노력을 이끌 것이라고 말했습니다.

[녹취: 폼페오 장관] “I’m excited to announce this morning that Steve Biegun is joining our team as the Special Representative for North Korea. Steve will direct US policy towards North Korea, and lead our efforts to achieve President Trump’s goal of the final, fully verified denuclearization of North Korea as agreed to by Chairman Kim Jung Un.”

폼페오 장관은 국무부가 압박 캠페인의 이행과 유지, 싱가포르에서 열린 첫 정상간 회담 준비, 그리고 김정은 위원장이 한 약속에 책임을 지도록 하는 기반을 만드는 데 이미 중요한 일을 해왔다고 강조했습니다.

State Department has already done important work in implementing and sustaining pressure campaign, put in together the first ever leader level summit in Singapore and laying the groundwork to hold accountable to promises that the Chairman Kim has made.”

Steve has had extensive career in foreign policy and in tough negotiating settings as well. He comes to us from his position as the VP of the International Government Affairs at the Ford Motor Company. In this job he has closely engaged foreign governments to advance Ford’s goal all around the world.”

아울러 비건 특별대표가 포드 자동차뿐만 아니라 20년 가까이 미 의회와 행정부에서 외교 정책을 다룬 경험이 있다고 강조했습니다.

폼페오 장관은 또 북한의 안보 위협을 외교를 통해 완전히 해결하는 것은 트럼프 대통령의 가장 중요한 우선과제 중 하나로 남아있다고 말했습니다.

또한 비건 특별대표는 이 역할을 맡을 충분한 자격이 있으며 미국이 직면한 도전과제들에 대해 확실한 생각을 갖고 있다고 강조했습니다. 이어 비건 특별대표가 미국인의 안전한 미래와 북한 주민들의 훨씬 더 밝은 미래를 보장하려는 미국의 임무를 이끌 수 있다는 점을 확신한다고 덧붙였습니다. 비건 특별대표도 이날 연설을 통해 (북한) 문제는 힘들고 해결하기 어렵겠지만 트럼프 대통령은 첫 시작을 만들어냈다고 말했습니다.
