반면 트럼프 행정부 출신인 세바스찬 고르카 전 백악관 국가안보회의(NSC) 부보좌관은 단거리 미사일 위협을 축소하는 듯한 트럼프 행정부의 이 같은 태도가 해당 미사일의 사정권에 포함된 한국, 일본 등 동맹국들에 나쁜 신호를 줄 것이라는 비판에 전혀 동의하지 않는다고 밝혔습니다.

They see our behavior in the Middle East. They've seen what we've done around the world. One of the first things we did when I was in the White House and the transition team is to send a message of reassurance to those countries that we will not allow them to be intimidated by either North Korea or China.”

But I think you have to ask the question, “Would those additional sanctions complicate prospects for resuming nuclear talks once the military exercises are over?” And I think from the US standpoint, the short range missile test don't violate the freeze for phrase agreement that President Trump has with Kim Jong that they reached in Singapore. So I don't think the US has any motivation to sanction North Korea for actions that are not a violation of the personal agreement between Trump and Kim.”

미국의 관점에서 단거리 미사일 발사는 싱가포르 정상회담에서 합의된 ‘동결 대 동결’ 약속을 어긴 게 아니므로, 트럼프 대통령과 김정은의 개인적 합의를 깨지는 않은 북한의 행동을 제재할 필요성을 못 느낀다는 설명입니다.
