미국은 한국 정부의 한-일 군사정보보호협정(GISOMIA,지소미아) 종료 결정에 실망감을 나타냈습니다. 두 나라가 관계 회복에 나설 것을 촉구했습니다. 이조은 기자가 보도합니다.

마이크 폼페오 미 국무장관은 “우리는 한국이 정보공유 협정과 관련해 내린 결정을 보게 돼 실망했다”고 말했습니다.

[녹취:폼페오 장관] “I actually spoke with my South Korean counterpart this morning. We're disappointed to see the decision that the South Koreans made about that information sharing agreement. We were urging each of the two countries to continue to engage, to continue to have dialogue. She was with the Japanese Foreign Minister yesterday, I believe our time. They were working to put this back together.”

폼페오 장관은 22일 캐나다 오타와에서 열린 크리스티아 프리랜드 캐나다 외교장관과의 공동 기자회견에서, 한국 정부의 지소미아 종료 결정과 관련해 “오늘 오전 한국 측 카운터파트와 얘기했다”며 이같이 밝혔습니다.

이어 “우리는 두 나라 각자 계속해서 관여하고 대화를 가질 것을 촉구해 왔다”며, 강경화 한국 외교부 장관이 전날 중국 베이징에서 고노 다로 일본 외상과 만났듯이 “그들은 이것을 다시 돌려놓기 위해 노력하고 있었다”고 설명했습니다.

그러면서, 미국은 한국과 일본이 양국 관계를 “정확히 올바른 곳으로” 되돌리길 희망한다고 말했습니다.

[녹취:폼페오 장관] “And there is no doubt that the shared interests of Japan and South Korea are important. And they're important to the United States of America. And we hope each of those two countries can begin to put that relationship back in exactly the right place.”

국무부 대변인실 관계자도 이날 VOA에, “미국은 반복해서 문재인 정부에 이런 결정이 미국과 우리의 동맹국들의 안보 이익에 부정적 영향을 미칠 것이라는 분명히 해왔다”고 밝혔습니다.

[국무부 관계자] “The United States has repeatedly made clear to the Moon administration that this decision would have a negative effect on U.S. security interests and those of our allies, and reflects a serious misapprehension on the part of the Moon Administration regarding the serious security challenges we face in Northeast Asia.”

또 “미국은 이런 결정이 동북아시아에서 우리가 직면한 심각한 안보 도전과 관련해, 문 정부 측에 심각한 오해를 반영한다는 점도 문 정부에 반복해서 분명히 해왔다”고 전했습니다.

미 국방부도 한국 정부의 이번 결정에 “강한 우려와 실망”을 표명하며, 한-일 갈등에도 불구하고 상호 방위와 안보 협력은 유지돼야 한다고 강조했습니다.

데이브 이스트번 국방부 대변인은 이날 VOA에 보낸 성명에서, “국방부는 문재인 정부가 지소미아 갱신을 보류한 데 대해 강한 우려와 실망을 표한다”고 밝혔습니다.

[이스트번 대변인] 'The Department of Defense expresses our strong concern and disappointment that the Moon Administration has withheld its renewal of the Republic of Korea's General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA) with Japan.”

그러면서 “우리는 한-일 관계 다른 영역에서의 마찰에도 불구하고 우리의 상호 방위와 안보 관계의 온전성은 반드시 지속돼야 한다고 강력히 믿는다”며, “우리는 가능한 한 일본과 한국과의 양자, 그리고 3자 방위, 안보 협력을 계속 추구할 것”이라고 밝혔습니다.

[이스트번 대변인] “We strongly believe that the integrity of our mutual defense and security ties must persist despite frictions in other areas of the ROK-Japan relationship. We'll continue to pursue bilateral and trilateral defense and security cooperation where possible with Japan and the ROK.'

앞서 이스트번 대변인은 이날 한국의 지소미아 종료 결정에 대해 “한-일 양국이 입장 차를 조속히 해소하기 위해 협력하길 권장한다”는 내용의 논평을 발표했습니다.

[이스트번 대변인] “We Encourage Japan and Korea to work together to resolve their differences. I hope they can do this quickly Northeast Asia is safer when the United States, Japan, and Korea work together in Solidarity and Friendship. Intel sharing is key to developing our common defense policy and strategy”
