미국 국무부 대변인은 12일 한국의 박상학 자유북한운동연합(FFNK) 대표의 국무부 방문에 대한 자유아시아방송(RFA) 질의에 “북한 주민들의 정보 접근을 촉진하기 위해 비영리 단체 및 다른 국가의 동반자 단체들과 계속 협력하고 있다”고 밝혔습니다. (We continue to work with our partners in the NGO community and in other countries to promote North Koreans access to information.)

탈북민 출신으로 한국에서 대북전단 살포 활동을 해온 박 대표는 지난 9일 미국 국무부를 방문해 스캇 버스비 국무부 민주주의·인권·노동 담당 부차관보와 한국의 이른바 ‘대북전단금지법’(개정 남북관계발전법)을 논의한 것으로 알려졌습니다.

대변인은 이와 관련해 “논의의 구체적인 내용은 언급할 수 없다”면서도 “북한으로의 자유로운 정보유입을 증대하는 것은 미국의 우선순위 사안”이라고 강조했습니다. (Increasing the free flow of information into North Korea is a U.S. priority.)

또 “정보의 보급은 북한 정권이 통제하지 않는 사실 기반의 정보에 북한 주민들이 접근하는 데 중요하다”고 전했습니다. (The dissemination of information is critical for North Koreans to access fact-based information not controlled by the North Korean regime.)

대변인은 이어 “세계적 정책으로서 우리는 인권 보호와 기본적인 자유를 옹호한다”며 “북한으로의 자유로운 정보 유입을 위한 활동을 지속하고 있다”고 덧붙였습니다. (As a global policy, we advocate for the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms. With regards to the DPRK, we continue to advocate for the free flow of information into the DPRK.)
