1972년 봄 미국 민주당 대통령 경선 후보 에드먼드 머스키 상원의원은 공개석상에서 눈물을 흘렸다가 "나약하고 감정적인 인물"이란 낙인이 찍혀 탈락했다. 당시 그는 가장 유력한 후보로 평가되고 있었다. 뉴 헴프셔 주 예비선거를 위한 운동을 벌이고 있을 때였다. 만체스터 유니온 리더紙가 머스키 의원의 부인은 "감정적으로 불안정한 여인"이라고 보도했다.
화가 난 머스키는 그 신문사 앞에서 트럭위에 올라 열정적으로 아내를 옹호하는 가두연설을 했다. 그러다가 감정에 복받쳐 울음을 터트렸다. 이 장면이 사진에 찍혀 보도되면서 지지율이 폭락했다. 그때 눈이 내리고 있었다. 그는 "눈물이 아니라 눈송이가 뺨에서 녹은 물이었다"고 거짓말을 했으나 이것이 역효과였다. 만체스타紙는 "남편도 또한 정서적으로 불안정하다"고 결정타를 먹였다.

머스키가 월남전 戰死者의 장례식 때 눈물을 흘렸다면 득표에 도움이 되었을 것이다. 公人이 공개석상에서 눈물을 흘려야 할 경우도 있다. 이런 점을 너무나 잘 아는 이가 클린턴 전 미국 대통령이었다.

클린턴은 대통령 재임시절 한 장관의 장례식에 참석하여 농담을 하고 있었다. 비디오 카메라가 그런 그를 찍고 있다는 것을 알아차리자 클린턴은 갑자기 심각한 표정이 되더니 눈에는 금새 눈물이 고이기 시작했다. 이 장면을 슬로 모션으로 본 기자들은 배꼽을 잡았다고 한다.

대통령 선거는 국민들이 생명 재산 자유를 맡아줄 5년 임기의 관리인을 채용하는 시험이기도 하다. 그렇다면 무엇을 봐야 하나?

1. 人性-악당인가 아닌가?
2. 심리-정상인가 아닌가?
3. 정직성-국민을 속일 인물인가의 與否
4. 준법성-前科를 참고로 하고 병역 등 국민의 의무이행 여부를 검증
5. 이념성향-공산주의자인가, 자유민주주의자인가?
6. 국가운영 능력, 특히 안보 외교 부문은 실수를 허용하지 않는다.
7. 언어능력-국내외로 정확하게 소통할 수 있는 국어 및 외국어 실력을 가졌는가?

검사사칭, 誣告, 음주운전, 특수공무집행방해 전과는 上記 7개 항목 중 1~4항목에 저촉된다. 前科에 대하여 반성이 없을 때는 추가 감점.

정치인은 주권자의 권한을 위임받아 행사하는 대리인입니다. 대리인의 도덕적 흠결은 위임받은 권한을 주권자를 위해서가 아닌 사적 목적으로 남용하는 것을 말합니다.
A politician is a representative exercising the authority mandated by voters. The ethical flaw of a representative refers to the abuse of the mandated authority for personal use and not for the voters.
감히 말씀드리건대, 정치에 입문한 이래 단 한 번도 사적 목적으로 권한을 남용한 바 없습니다. 검경, 언론, 정권권력 같은 기득권으로부터 온갖 공격을 받았지만 살아남을 수 있었던 이유입니다.
I dare say, ever since I became a politician, I never even once abused for personal use the authority with which I’ve been vested. I have been the target of all kinds of attacks by the police, prosecution, media and politicians, but I was able to survive because of that very reason.

I was indicted for spreading false information when all I did was keep my mouth shut. 없는 죄도 만들고 있는 죄도 덮는 무소불위 대한민국 정치검사들이 이재명에게 없는 죄 만들려고 엉뚱한 사람에게 없는 죄 만들어 씌운 '이재명 먼지떨이 표적수사'만 봐도 알 수 있습니다.
Politically-motivated prosecutors in Korea are adept at accusing the innocent and absolving the guilty. It is clear to see how such prosecutors are trying to target Lee Jae-myung to see if they can dig up any dirt.

다시 강조하지만, 대리인인 정치인의 도덕성은 주권자에게 위임받은 권한을 비리나 부정부패처럼 사적목적으로 남용했느냐로 판단됩니다.
I stress again that the ethics of a politician is determined by whether he or she engaged in acts of corruption by abusing for personal use the authority mandated by voters.

앞으로도 주권자를 두려워할 줄 알며, 대리인으로서 본분을 잊지 않고, 청렴한 정치를 해나갈 것을 약속드립니다.
