*People met on my backpacking 94 – Effects of English Conversation 10

-A real travel expert carried a compass-
-Even in Africa, eating pizza, McDonald and listening to pop songs-

After breaking up with my Spanish friends there, the train started running again towards Rabat. After a while, another white western guy joined me in my seat. This guy just gave me only a polite eye-to-eye and sat quietly to the seat. There was absolutely no need for me to do that, so I took an active interest in him.

Anyway, this guy's hat had the Danish flag on it. Of course I thought he was a Danish. When asking him, he was American. It was surprising for me to see Americans there. Why? Because this place had strong anti-Americanism. He was Steve. He was also going to Rabat just like me. Glad to hear that I've got another friend to go to Rabat with me. Like this, wherever I went, especially when backpacking around the world, I always had someone to talk with if I spoke first. In my experience, it's rare for Westerners to talk to me first. Not because they hate Asians, but because they think that Asians can't speak English. So when they meet someone like me, they ask a lot of questions and enjoy talking.

Finally arrived in Rabat, the capital of Morocco at 8 o'clock at night . Even though it's the capital city, the street lights were too dark. Though felt gloomy, it was quite different from the area around Tangier Station, which was uneasy. Instead, large European-style buildings in the dim light greeted me quietly. Morocco's capital, Rabat, was also something different.

Steve set his big backpack down on the sidewalk. He told me that finding a guesthouse was no big deal. When I asked him how he was going to find a place to stay in such a dark place, he said No Problem. He took a compass out of his backpack and set his direction by matching it with the azimuth on the map. And we started walking. Maybe a 15 min's walk. Finally, the guesthouse appeared. The power of the compass was great (I took it with me since then).

When we entered, the owner was not there. We put our backpacks down. Leaving a note there, we went out to dinner. After walking for 7 or 8 mins, we came to the downtown area. In an instant, my impression of Africa changed drastically. It felt like I was in some European city. There was not only a 7-Eleven convenience store, but also McDonald's, KFC, and pizza. I was really bewildered. "Am I really in Africa?"

All the time I was walking through the city, I couldn't feel that I was really in Africa. In the city, shopping centers, restaurants, convenience stores, and almost everything were like modern western urban culture. We didn't know what their traditional Moroccan food was. So we decided to go to a western restaurant.

We went into the pizzeria. The interior decoration of the place was no less than that of a wealthy country. Much crowded with guests. It caught my eye at a glance that they were the wealthy of Morocco. Their clothes and appearance looked that way. Pizza was also very expensive. The price was equivalent to the cost of a night's accommodation (at that time, $2.00).

Me: Steve, do you think this is the real Africa? Do you really feel that way?
Him: No way. But as you know, every big city in the world is alike. Of course, I hate excessive westernization.

Steve was from Detroit, USA. He studied French literature in college, and was learning practical French. He came to France to learn French. Studied French there for five months. The problem was that the cost there was so high that he came Morocco at risk. This is because Morocco is relatively cheap and French was widely spoken. I said to him, "You know Moroccans hate Americans. Are you not afraid of it?" Of course he said it was scary. So he pretended to be Danish. The hostility of Muslims to Americans was horrible. It was Tunisia where I realized it. I'm going to talk about it later in the Tunisian edition.

I had already been asked three times by the locals while eating pizza at the pizzeria. At first I couldn't understand why they were only asking me questions. "Jeena?" or ¡°Who are you?¡± They pronounce China as Jeena (Spanish pronunciation). Their English was like that. But there were many more who stared at me without saying a word.

They usually did not move their pupils when looking at me. He didn't even blink. How majestic the Arabs were. Their eyes, noses and mouths made a strong impression. Every time they stared at me, I got nervous. But strangely enough, they weren't interested in Steve at all. It was because, I thought, they couldn't judge European or American ancestry based on Steve outward appearance. Anyway, it seemed to them that the rare Asians were more curious and interesting than the common Westerners.

When we got back to the hostel, it's 10pm. We were given beds. The structure of the accommodation there was a bit peculiar. First of all, the interior space was very spacious. The ceiling was also very high. Gave a cool feeling. The walls were full of large murals related to Islam. In every aspect, such as the structure of the house and the interior decoration, it was an Islamic culture.

Steve went to bed early, saying he was jogging in the morning. He was a really cool guy. It's not that easy to go jogging in the early morning while traveling abroad, you know. My first night on the African continent, I still din't feel it. "Am I really in Africa? Hmmm~~" -be continued-

  Thanks.
