지금까지 세계여행 중 내가 만난 수많은 외국인 중 흥미롭지 않은 사람은 없었다. 그들과의 대화에는 항상 뭔가 깊이 생각하고 배울 것이 있었다. 오늘 만난 23세의 리투아니아 젊은이도 그렇다. 애국심이 투철한 꿈많은 젊은이였다. 미래의 파이럿이 되기 위해 비행학교에서 4년 과정을 마치고 친구와 함께 일주일간 휴가를 얻어 방콕을 거쳐 이곳 파타야에서 마무리를 짓고 귀국한단다.
그는 내가 2014년에 두 달간 아내와 함께 발트 삼국을 포함 벨라루스 등 주변 국가를 거쳐 폴란드까지 여행했다는 말에 깜짝 놀라며 내 말에 귀를 기울였다. 나는 그에게 우리가 그 유명한 ‘발트의 길’ 즉 리투아니아(빌뉴스)에서 라트비아(리가) 그리고 에스토니아(탈린)까지 이어졌던 ‘인간띠’(약 650km)의 출발점인 빌뉴스 광장에 갔던 얘기를 했다. 그곳 바닥에 묻어놓은 동판에는 출발자의 두 발자국이 새겨져 있었고 우리는 그곳에 직접 서 봤다고 하니 그의 두 눈빛은 더 밝아 보였다.
그가 내게 물었다. “내가 알기론 당신의 나라 한국은 정말 배울 것이 많고 위대한 나라라고 생각합니다. 첫째, 소련과 중공 북한이 함께 공작(工作)해 한국전쟁을 일으켰지만, 그들을 물리쳤습니다. 우리도 경험했지만, 공산주의자들은 악마 중 악마입니다. 둘째, 한국은 자동차, 조선, 반도체 등을 생산하는 세계 5대 공업국 중 하나입니다. 그 혜택을 가장 많이 보는 나라 중 하나가 바로 우리나라 리투아니아입니다. 클라이페다 항구에는 세계 유일의 ‘초대형 해상(海上) 액화천연가스(LNG) 저장선(貯藏船)’인 인디펜던스호가 정박해 있습니다. 이곳에는 7만 톤이라는 어마어마한 양의 LNG가 저장돼 있습니다. 에너지 안보를 확보한 겁니다. 이것을 한국의 현대조선이 만들었습니다. 러시아의 상습적이고 악질적인 에너지 협박과 탄압에서 해방됐습니다. 한국의 이런 기적 같은 힘은 어디서 나오나요?”
내가 답했다. “그 힘은 첫째도 둘째도 위대한 두 지도자에게서 나왔습니다. 이승만 대통령과 박정희 대통령이었습니다. 마찬가지로 당신의 나라에도 위대한 지도자 ‘달리아 그리바우스이테’가 있었기에 ‘인디펜던스’호가 탄생했지요. 그리고 클라이페다 항구에 정박해 그 기능을 다 하고 있습니다. 물론 어느 나라나 위대한 지도자는 역시 위대한 국민이 뽑습니다. 그런 의미에서 한국도 리투아니아도 계속 발전하면서 자유와 풍요를 누릴 것으로 믿습니다.”
내가 그에게 ‘달리아 그리바우스이테’ 대통령을 잊지 않고 언급한 것은 그럴만한 이유가 있었다. 당시 내가 리투아니아에 있을 때 한국에는 박근혜 대통령이 있었다. 두 지도자의 공통점은 자기 나라에서는 최초의 여성 대통령이었다는 것. 당시만 해도 나는 영국의 ‘대처 총리’ 독일의 ‘메르켈 총리’ 아일랜드의 ‘메리 로빈슨’ 대통령, 핀란드의 ‘타르야 할로넨’ 대통령, 칠레의 ‘미첼 바첼레트’ 대통령 등 세계를 움직이는 여성 최고 지도자에 대한 관심과 기대가 매우 컸다.
내가 그에게 물었다. “당신은 자국의 역사에서 가장 위대한 인물과 가장 자랑스러울 때가 있었다면 언제였다고 생각합니까?”
그의 답: “게디미나스 대공(大公)과 그의 아들 알기르다스입니다. 그들이 아니었으면 비록 100여 년에 불과한 짧은 기간이었지만, 16~17세기 동안 유럽에서 가장 큰 영토를 가진 강대국 중 하나의 지위를 얻지 못했을 겁니다. 몽골 침략자를 격파한 것도 그들이었습니다. 물론 소련 공산당의 압제로부터 벗어나 오늘의 자유와 독립을 누리게 된 ‘발트의 길’ 약 650km의 ‘인간 띠’를 성공적으로 완성한 것도 자랑스럽다. 또 있습니다. 비록 오늘날의 리투아니아는 인구 300만이 안 되는 소국이지만 러시아의 공갈 협박과 맞서 싸운 것처럼 중공의 어떤 외교적 압박과 경제 제재 등 어떤 위협에도 절대 물러서지 않는 용기를 가진 나라 임을 자랑할 수 있습니다.”
그렇다. 실제로 리투아니아는 최근 몇 년 동안 세계 외교가를 놀라게 했다. 한국에도 크게 보도됐지만 거대한 국제 깡패 중국에 사사건건 맞서 싸운 것이다. 리투아니아가 자국에 대만 대표부를 정식 출범시켰다고 중공은 바로 경제 보복과 함께 리투아니아 왕복 열차를 중단시켰다. 이에 개의치 않고 리투아니아는 아예 대만 대표부 현판에 보란 듯이 ‘대만’이라는 국호를 크고 선명하게 새겨 넣었다. 중국으로부터 더 강한 공갈 협박이 나오자 역시 보란 듯이 이번엔 중국인들이 감추고 싶은 국제법상 범죄인 신장위구르의 ‘집단 학살’을 공개 비난했다. 중국 스마트폰을 쓰면 자신의 정보가 중국으로 넘어가니 가능한 한 빨리 버리라고 촉구하기도 했다. 리투아니아 정부가 국제 무법자 중공의 협박에 굴하지 않고 당당히 싸우는 용기에 미국과 EU 등은 감동하며 그들을 지지하기 시작했다.
나는 이런 친구들을 볼 때마다 부러움을 느낀다. 내가 느낄 수 없는 영역의 자부심이 그들에겐 있기 때문이다. 그것은 바로 그들의 조상이 한때는 세계사를 흔들 만큼 큰 영향력을 가졌다는 사실이다. 유럽인들은 말할 것도 없고, 터키, 아르헨티나, 이란, 이라크, 인도, 몽골, 이집트, 등이 그렇다. 터키 이스탄불의 어느 터미널에서 목격한 장면이다. 체격이 우람한 20대 후반의 아시안 얼굴의 젊은이가 화난 얼굴로 고함을 치듯 횡설수설하니까 주변의 현지인들이 그를 제지하려고 했다. 그때 그는 “나는 몽골인이다.”라고 크게 말하니 다들 그냥 물러났다. 몽골군은 13세기 한때, 오늘날의 터키인 술탄국을 무자비하게 공격해 점령했다. 몽골군에 대한 공포는 여전히 살아 있는 듯했다.
오늘 만난 23세의 리투아니아 젊은이의 정신에도 마치 몽골의 젊은이처럼 그들의 옛 조상이 남긴 애국심과 용기와 자부심이 살아 움직이고 있는 건 아닌가 하는 느낌을 받았다.

People met on my backpacking 187 - The offspring of world heroes
So far, every foreigner I've met on my travels throughout the world has been significant and engaging. Conversations with them were always thought-provoking and educational for me. The same thing happened to a 23-year-old Lithuanian youth whom I met today. He was a dreamy young man who was deeply patriotic. After completing a four-year training at a flight school to become a future pilot, he was enjoying a week vacation with a buddy to see Bangkok and Pattaya.
He was startled and listened to me when I told him that I had spent two months in 2014 traveling with my wife through the Baltic nations, Belarus, and other nearby countries, all the way to Poland. I told him about our excursion to Vilnius Square, the beginning point of the 'Baltic Way', a 650-kilometer 'human chain' that connected Lithuania (Vilnius), Latvia (Riga), and Estonia (Tallinn). I stated that I had personally saw the person's two footprints inscribed on a copper plate buried in the earth.
He informed me about Korea's accomplishments, which included defeating the Soviet Union, Chinese communists, North Korea during the Korean War, and its status as one of the world's top five industrial countries. He highlighted the Hyudai's enormous contributions to Lithuania, such as the Independence, the world's largest maritime LNG storage ship, which can contain 70,000 tons of LNG. Hyundai Shipbuilding is responsible for Lithuania's energy security, which is free of Russian energy intimidation and persecution. He questioned the source of Korea's miraculous powers.
I responded. "That power sprang from two outstanding leaders. They were Presidents Syngman Rhee and Park Chung-hee. Similarly, your country had a fantastic leader, Dahlia Grybausite, and the ship 'Independence' was born. It is currently docked at the Klaipeda port and carrying out its tasks. Of course, in every country, great leaders are picked by great citizens. In this regard, I believe that both Korea and Lithuania will continue to grow and enjoy freedom and abundance.“
I mentioned President Dalia Grybauste to him for a good reason. When I was in Lithuania, Korea's president was Park Geun Hye. The two leaders shared the distinction of becoming each of their countries' first female presidents. I was fascinated by the world's prominent female leaders at the time, including British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Irish Prime Minister Mary Robinson, Finnish Tarya Halonen, and Chilean President Michelle Bachelet.
I asked him the following question: "When do you think there was the greatest figure and the proudest time in your country's history?“
He said, "They are those Grand Duke Gedminas and his son Aldas. We would not have been one of the biggest European powers in the 16th and 17th centuries if it hadn't been for them. They also defeated Mongolian invaders. Of course, we are delighted to have successfully finished the "Baltic Way," which has resulted in a country's liberation and independence from the oppressive Soviet Communist Party. Although Lithuania is a small nation with a population of fewer than 3 million people, I can claim of being a country that never backs down against any threats, such as diplomatic pressure or economic sanctions.
Lithuania, a country famed for its determination in opposing China, has attracted world diplomatic attention by formally establishing the Diplomatic Representation of Taiwan. The Lithuanian government, which displayed the country title 'Taiwan' on the mission's signboard, encouraged its citizens to avoid using Chinese cellphones since they may transfer personal information to China. The Lithuanian government's bravery in confronting China's threats prompted the United States and the European Union to back them.
Every time I see these guys, I feel jealous. This is because they feel pride in a way that I do not. It is the fact that their forefathers once wielded immense power, enough to shake world history. Turkey, Argentina, Iran, Iraq, India, Mongolia and other countries, not to mention Europe, are obvious examples of this. This is what I saw in a terminal in Istanbul, Turkey. A young Asian man in his late twenties yelled angrily, and the villagers tried to control him. At the time, he said loudly, "I am Mongolian," and everyone withdrew. The Mongolian army violently assaulted and occupied the sultanate of modern-day Turkey in the thirteenth century. Somehow, the fear of the Mongolian army seemed still alive to them.
Even in the spirit of a 23-year-old Lithuanian young guy I met today, I could detect the patriotism, courage, and pride passed on by their forefathers, similar to a Mongolian young man.
