수천 개의 프랑스어 단어들이 영어에 유입되어 독특한 뉘앙스로 사용되고 있으며 일상생활에서 의사표현에 중요한 역할을 하고 있다. 그 중에서도 많이 사용되는 것들을 소개한다.


aide-de-camp (장군의 전속부관)
Major Kim is General Lee's aide-de-camp. (김 소령은 이 장군의 전속부관이다.)

à la carte (코스로 나오는 음식이 아닌, 일품요리를 말함)
Let's order à la carte this time. (이번에는 일품요리를 주문하자.)

à la mode (원래의 뜻은 “유행을 따라서”지만, 후식을 말할 때에는 파이 따위에 아이스크림을 곁들인 것을 말한다)
I want some apple pie à la mode. (나는 아이스크림을 결들인 사과파이를 원해.)

bon appétit! (맛있게 드세요!)
My wife made this dish especially for you. Bon appétit!
(제 아내가 특별히 당신을 위해 이 요리를 만들었어요. 맛있게 드세요!)

bon voyage (여행 잘 하세요)
Bon voyage, John. Have a nice trip. (잘 가요, 존. 즐거운 여행이 되세요.)
I went to the airport to bid them bon voyage. (나는 그들을 배웅하러 공항에 갔다.)

carte blanche (서명이 있는 백지 위임장, 전권 위임)
I'm giving you carte blanche to take necessary action.
(필요한 조치를 취할 수 있도록 내가 자네에게 전권을 위임하네.)
The ambassador had carte blanche to negotiate the agreement.
(대사는 협약 협상에 대한 전권을 가지고 있었다.)

c'est la vie (That's life. 그게 인생이다)
Well, we lost the game. C'est la vie. (그래, 우리는 경기에서 졌어. 그게 인생이야.)

chalet (스위스식 산장, 별장)
I'd like to live in a chalet in the mountains. (나는 산 속의 산장에서 살고 싶다.)
He built a little chalet for his wife in the Swiss alps.

chargé (chargé d'affaires. 대리 대사)

chic (stylish, smart와 유사한 말 - 스마트한, 멋진, 매력이 있는, 우아하고 기품이 있는)

You're looking very chic tonight, Mary. (매리, 너 오늘밤 정말 근사하다.)

comme ci, comme ça (그저 그래, 그렇고 그래)

coup d'etat (쿠데타, 무력 정변)
The army staged a coup d'etat against the government.
(군이 정부에 대하여 쿠데타를 일으켰다.)
The president was overthrown by a military coup.

cul-de-sac (막힌 길, 막다른 골목)
We live at the end of a cul-de-sac. (우리는 막다른 골목 끝에 산다.)
A house in a cul-de-sac is ideal for small children.

debut (데뷔하다. 연예계나 사교계에 첫발을 디디다. 문단에 등단하다)

déjàvu (旣視感-기시감, 전에 이미 봤거나 체험한 것처럼 느껴지는 심리적 착각현상)

détente (국제적인 긴장완화, 국가 간의 화해)
The UN secretary general proposed a new plan to bring about a détente between Israel and Palestine.

en route (어디로 가는 도중에)
The Foreign Minister is en route to Germany.
(외무부 장관은 독일로 가는 중이다.)

(강릉에 가는 도중에 우리는 원주에서 점심을 먹을 것이다.)

ensemble (예술 또는 분위기의 종합적 효과, 조화. 2부 이상으로 된 합창이나 합주곡, 연주자들)
Her spring ensemble was very well coordinated.

A lot of thought went into their living room ensemble.

esprit de corps (조직이나 단체의 명예를 위한 집단정신, 단결력)

exposé (추한 사실이나 숨겨둔 일의 폭로, 누설)

risqué (외설적인, 풍속을 해치는)
