버락 후세인 오바마 미(美) 대통령이 역대 대통령 가운데 동성애자(양성애자, 트렌스젠더 포함)출신 공직자를 가장 많이 임명한 대통령으로 꼽혔다.
AP통신은 최근 동성애자 단체인 ‘게이-레즈비언 리더십 연구소’(Gay & Lesbian Leadership Institute)의 자료를 인용, 오바마 대통령 취임 후 임명된 동성애자 고위 공직자와 정책 관료 수가 150명 이상(빌 클린턴 8년 재임 당시 140명)이라고 보도했다.
오바마 대통령의 든든한 지지층 가운데 하나인 동성애자들은 오바마 행정부가 동성애자를 각료로 선임하는 첫 대통령이 되기를 기대했지만 그러한 바람은 실현되지 못했다.
대신 오바마는 존 베리를 동성애자로는 역대 최고위직인 인사관리처장에 임명, 미국의 190만 명에 달하는 연방정부 공무원들을 관리하도록 했다.
또 백악관 직속 '환경의 질 개선위원회' 위원장과 미(美) 수출입은행장에 각각 동성애자임을 공언한 낸시 서틀리와 프레드 호크버그를 임명했고, 남성에서 여성으로 성전환한 아만다 심슨을 상무부 고위기술고문으로 임명했다.
백악관 대변인 신 이노우에도 오바마 행정부가 부시나 클린턴 전 대통령이 임기 전반에 걸쳐 임명한 것보다 더 많은 동성애자 공직자들을 임명했다고 밝혔다.
현재 게이-레즈비언 리더십 연구소 홈페이지(http://www.glli.org/presidential)에는 오바마가 임명한 고위 공직자 목록(동성애자 출신 중-하위 공직자 비공개)이 공개되어 있다.
낙태나 동성애를 강력 반대하는 보수파 후보들이 신구교인들의 백업으로 대거 당선돼 진보세력이 승승장구할 수 없음을 여실히 보여줬다.
이런 가운데 최근 중간선거에서 야당인 공화당은 61석을 얻어 연방 하원을 장악, 60년래 최대 승리를 거뒀다. 반면 여당인 민주당은 상원 다수당 위치만 간신히 지켜 70년 사상 최악의 참패를 맛보았다.
퓨포럼의 조사에 따르면, 금번 선거에서 기독교를 비롯한 다양한 종교그룹들이 공화당 편으로 기울었고, 특히 신교권은 투표인구 30%를 차지하는 백인 복음주의자들의 78%를 비롯한 60%, 유권자의 약12%인 구교권 역시 과반수인 약54%가 그랬다.
평소 민주당을 지지하던 무종교인들의 32%도 이번엔 공화당 손을 들어줬다.
유대계의 진보세는 여전히 강해 66%가 민주당 후보들을 택했다. 그러나 1982년 이래 평균 24%에 그쳤던 유대계 공화당 지지세가 이번 선거에서 31-37%로 비교적 큰 폭으로 상향했다.
전통적으로 정통 유대교인들은 공화당을, 진보적 유대인들은 민주당을 지지하는 성향을 보였으나 올해는 진보주의자들의 공화당 지지도도 더 늘었다.
친(親)가족 단체인 신앙자유연맹(FFC 랠프 리드 총재)의 선거후 조사에서도 이번 선거의 최대 유권자 파워는 보수계 기독교인들이었다는 분석을 내놓았다. 근래 새 보수권 형성을 기해온 '티파티'(Tea Party) 세력의 52%가 거듭났다고 자임하는 복음주의 신자들이다.
