FREEDOM ±³¾ç¿µ¾î (206): 'Devils' (excerpt) by Dostoevsky-3

¡®In America you changed your view and when you came back to Switzerland, you wanted to resign. They made no reply, but ordered you take over someone¡¯s printing press here in Russia, to keep it, and then hand it over to someone sent by them to you. I don¡¯t know all the details, but that¡¯s the general plan, isn¡¯t it? And you agreed either in the hope or on the condition that it would be their last demand and afterwards they¡¯d release you altogether. All this, whether it¡¯s true or not, I found out entirely by chance, not from them. But what you still don¡¯t know, it seems, is that these gentlemen have no intention whatsoever of breaking with you.¡¯

¡®That¡¯s ridiculous!¡¯ Shatov howled. ¡®I declared in all honesty that I disagreed with them in everything! That¡¯s my right, my right of conscience and free thought... I won¡¯t stand for it! There¡¯s no power that could...¡¯

¡®You¡¯d better stop shouting, you know,¡¯ Nikolai Vsevolodovich interrupted him with utmost seriousness. ¡®That Vekhovensky is the sort of fellow who might be eavesdropping on us right now, using his own ears or someone else¡¯s, perhaps in your own passageway. Even that drunkard Lebyardkin was probably obliged to shadow you; perhaps you were supposed to follow him, too. Isn¡¯t that right? Tell me instead: has Vekhovensky agreed to accept your arguments or not?¡¯

¡®Yes; he said it was allowed and that I did have the right...¡¯

¡®Well, he¡¯s deceiving you. I know that even Kirillov, who scarcely belongs to the group at all, has been providing them with information about you. And they have many agents, some of whom don¡¯t even know they¡¯re working for the society. They¡¯ve always kept an on you. Meanwhile, Peter Vekhovensky has come here to settle your case once and for all and he has full authority to do so; that is, to eliminate you at the first suitable opportunity, as someone who knows too much and could inform on them. I repeat, it¡¯s certain; let me add that for some reason they¡¯re absolutely convinced you¡¯re a spy, and that if you still haven¡¯t informed against them, you will soon. Is that true?¡¯

Shatov¡¯s lip curled at such a question posed in so matter-of-fact way.

¡®If I really were a spy, who would I report to?¡¯ he said angrily, without answering the question directly. ¡®No, leave me alone! Let me go to the devil!¡¯ he cried, suddenly seizing on his original idea, which, to all appearance, affected him much more than the news that his life was in danger. ¡®You, you, Stavrogin, how could you become involved in this shameful, inept, servile stupidity? You¡ªa member of their society! What sort of an exploit is that for Nikolai Stavrogin?¡¯ he cried, almost in despair.
