KAL에서 마일리지 유효기간 마감 일정을 알려 왔다. 이게 웬 떡이냐. 전혀 모르고 있었는데. 일본 삿포로를 택했다. 2005년 우리는 신칸센으로 규슈의 구마모토에서 홋카이도의 삿포로까지 일본 열도(列島)를 종단(縱斷)했다. 그 이후 처음이다. 당시 찍어 놓은 삿포로 사진과 요즘의 삿포로를 검색 비교해 봤다. 흥미로웠다.

인천공항에서 약 3시간 비행 후 삿포로 신치토세 공항에 도착. 삿포로 시내 투숙. 다음 날 우리는 먼저  '오도리' 공원에 갔다. 길게 쭉 뻗은 공원, 이곳의 상징 삿포로 TV 탑 등 여전했다. 예상과 달리 외국인 관광객은 몇 안 됐다. 대신 현지인 노인들 그리고 주부들이 아이들과 함께 공원 산책을 하는 정도였다.

공원을 걷다 내 눈에 재미있는 장면이 포착됐다. 공원 벤치에 젊은 남녀 외국인이 앉아서 각자 뭔가 열심히 읽고 있었다. 극적인 대조(對照)를 보였다. 남자는 첨단의 상징인 스마트폰을, 여자는 구시대(舊時代) 유물인 두툼한 여행 정보지, ’론니 플래닛‘을. 몇십 년 만에 보는 ’론니 플래닛‘이었다.

이는 스마트폰이 등장하기 전 배낭여행자의 길잡이였다. 바이블과 같은 존재였다. 암튼, 지금이 어느 땐데 저런 두꺼운 종이 정보지를 읽고 있을까. 궁금했다. 무슨 사연이 있지 싶어 다가가 물어봤다. 우선 그녀의 국적이 궁금증의 절반을 풀어 주었다. 영국이었다. 영국 영어의 투박한 발음부터 강한 보수의 이미지가 그랬다.

남자는 태국계 영국인이었다. 대학 졸업 후 한 직장에서 만난 커플이었다. 좋아 보였다. 그들은 영국 동남부 ’캔터베리‘에 산다고 했다. 내 귀가 번쩍 띄었다. 까맣게 잊고 살았던 이름이 나왔기 때문이다. ’캔터베리‘는 고전(古典) ’초서’의 ‘캔터베리 이야기’로 유명한 곳이다. 내가 이곳, ‘캔터베리 대성당’을 직접 찾아간 계기도 ‘제프리 초서’의 작품을 읽은 덕택이었다.

1990년 런던에 처음 갔을 때다. 평소 마음에 둔 곳을 먼저 갔다. 런던을 중심으로 셰익스피어 고향, 스트랫퍼드 어폰 에이번, 초서의 캔터베리 이야기 배경인 캔터베리 대성당, 옥스퍼드대학 그리고 케임브리지대학과 도버 등이었다. 이들 역시 놀란 듯이 눈을 크게 뜨며 말했다. 놀란 이유는 나와 달랐다. 자기들은 내가 캔터베리 대성당을 찾았던 1990년엔 태어나지도 않았다는 것.

우리가 서울에서 왔다고 하자 남자 친구가 반색을 했다. 5년 전 혼자 배낭여행으로 한국에 왔고, 설악산 구경과 강원도 스키장에서 스키를 탔던 이야기, 제일 맛있게 먹었던 음식은 불고기와 비빔밥이었다고. 한국 자랑이 대단했다.

여자 친구는 아시아 여행이 처음이란다. 가끔 보는 현상이지만, 서구 젊은이들 중엔 놀랍게도 동양권 특히 한국, 일본, 중국 등을 처음 가 봤다는 친구들이 있다. 그에 관한 얘기도 나누다 보면 의외의 이유를 발견한다. 꽤 재미있다. 암튼, 이들은 이번 7일 휴가 동안 일본에서 4일을 태국에서 3일을 마치고 돌아간단다. 너무 아쉽단다. 특히 그의 파트너가 그랬다. <계속>

People met on my backpacking 205 – Lonly Planet, the backpacker's friend, was alive in Sapporo Park

KAL Airlines has notified us of the expiration date of the miles. What a surprise present!! We choose Sapporo, Japan. This is our first trip to Sapporo since 2005, when we took the Shinkansen bullet train from Kumamoto in Kyushu to Sapporo in Hokkaido. It was fun to look back at the images we shot of Sapporo.

After traveling for nearly three hours from Incheon International Airport, we arrived at Sapporo Shinchitose Airport. The next day, we visited 'Odori' Park. Nothing had changed. The lengthy park and the landmark Sapporo TV tower are there. However, there were few international visitors in sight. Instead, local old folks and housewives liked strolling through the park with their children.

While walking in the park, I caught an interesting scene. A young man and a woman were sitting on the bench, reading something hard. It was a dramatic contrast. The man had a smartphone, the symbol of cutting-edge technology, and the woman had a thick travel guide book, Lonly Planet, an old-fashioned relic.

It was a backpacker's must-have guide, just like a bible, before a smartphone appeared. Anyway, I was curious about the young lady reading a thick paper guide book in today's digital age. I asked her, and I knew that she was from the UK. Her rugged pronunciation of English and her strong, conservative image told me who she was.

The man was Thai-British. After graduating from college, they worked together. They looked good. They mentioned that they live in Canterbury, southeast England. Canterbury is famous for the classic Canterbury Tale. I told them I'd been to Canterbury Cathedral after reading Jeffrey Chaser's works.

I said that in 1990, I visited Shakespeare's hometown of Stratford-upon-Avon, Canterbury Cathedral, Oxford University, Cambridge University, and Dover. They also expressed surprise because they were not even born in 1990, when I visited Canterbury Cathedral.

He enjoyed learning that we were from Seoul. He stated that he backpacked alone to Mt. Seorak in Korea five years ago and skied at a resort in Gangwon Province. He said his favorite cuisines were bulgogi and bibimbap.

However, his partner was new to Asia. It's a fascinating phenomenon to me. Anyway, they'll be returning home after a seven-day tour that includes four days in Japan and three in Bangkok. His partner, in particular, expressed remorse at the trip's short duration.
