여행 중 만난 사람들 218–역사를 잊은 민족에겐 희망없다 프랑스 남서쪽 피레네산맥의 밑자락에는 루르드라는 가톨릭 성지(聖地)가 있다. 나는 이곳을 찾았다. *사실 나는 이를 계기로 몇 년 후 다시 배낭여행자로 신비스럽게 보였던 피레네산맥을 넘어 ‘안도라’라는 초미니 공화국에도 갔다. 물론 당시 이곳에서도 한국인은 내가 처음이라 하여 참으로 웃지 못할 에피소드들이 많았던 곳이다. 암튼 오늘 얘기의 ‘루르드’는 내가 1980년대 초 프랑스 지방을 여행한 곳 가운데 가장 오래 기억에 남는 곳 중 하나이다.

내가 이곳을 가게 된 동기는 1970년대 내가 근무했던 대학교를 방문한 아일랜드인 수사(修士)를 만나고 나서다. 당시 한국에도 아일랜드 출신의 신부와 수사가 많았다. 그는 서울 신길동에 있던 ‘돈 보스코 직업전문학교’에서 근무했다. 그곳은 ‘살레시오회’가 운영하는 일종의 청소년 교육기관이었다. 주로 시골에서 무작정 서울로 올라온 중학교 나이 또래의 불우(不遇)청소년들이 대상이었다.

그가 수사가 된 동기를 들었다. 그는 청소년 때 부모님을 따라 루르드 성지를 방문했다. 그는 그곳의 성모(聖母) 발현(發顯) 동굴에서 깊은 소명의식(召命意識)을 느꼈다고 했다. 실제로 그곳에 가보니 그가 나에게 전해준 많은 얘기가 떠올랐다. 성모 발현의 동굴 주변에 놓여있는 수많은 의족(義足)과 목발 등은 참으로 감동적이었다. 거기엔 개개인의 이름과 기적(奇蹟)의 치유를 체험한 날짜가 적혀 있었다. 이곳을 방문한 교황 이름도 함께 있었다(베네딕토 15세, 비오 11세, 비오 12세, 요한 23세).

그날 저녁 나는 호텔 로비에서 아일랜드에서 성지 순례 온 두 자매를 만났다. 우리는 공통의 관심사인 루르드 성지에 관해 얘길 나누다 또 다른 공통점인 식민지배(植民支配)를 받았던 역사 이야기로 이어졌다. 나는 이분들의 해박(該博)한 역사 지식에 많은 감동을 받았다. 역사(歷史)를 모르거나 잊은 민족에겐 희망(希望)이 없다는 말을 다시 들었다. 수치스러운 역사를 반복한다는 것이었다.

People met on my backpacking 218 - no hope for us that has forgotten history

Lourdes, a Catholic holy spot, is located at the base of the Pyrenees in southwest France. I went to this spot. *In reality, a few years later, I traveled to Andorra beyond the Pyrenees Mountains, which appeared strange as a backpacker. Of course, there were many memorable moments because I was the first Korean here at the time. Anyway, today's Lourdes is one of the most unforgettable sites I visited in France in the early 1980s.

My inspiration for coming here sprang from meeting an Irish Catholic brother who visited the institution where I taught in the 1970s. At the time, Korea had a large number of Irish Fathers and Brides. He worked at the Don Bosco Vocational School in Singil-dong, Seoul. It was a type of juvenile education facility operated by the Salessio Organization. This establishment was mostly aimed at youths of middle school age who had relocated to Seoul from the countryside.

I learned why he became a brother. When he was a teenager, he went to Lourdes with his parents. He stated that he experienced a strong feeling of calling in the cave where St. Mary's expression came to mind. When I finally traveled there, I remembered many of the tales he had told me. The multiple artificial legs and crutches scattered about the cave were extremely touching. It also included people's names and dates of their miraculous healing experiences. The names of the Popes who visited the location were also added (Benedicto XV, Pius XII, and John 23).

That evening, I met two Irish sisters on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in the hotel lobby. We talked about our shared interest in the Holy Land of Lourdes, which led to another historical narrative about colonization. I was amazed by their wide historical knowledge. I was once again warned that there is no chance for a nation that is unaware of or has lost its past. It was to repeat a horrible past.
