약 1년 동안 혼자 아무 제약(制約) 없이 미국 내 곳곳을 여행했다. 이 세상에서 가장 자유롭고 거대(巨大)한 나라에서 나에게 주어진 자유를 최대한 누렸다. 어릴 적부터 부산 영도(외항선이 드나들던 곳)에서 자란 영향도 컸지만, 교과서 특히 영어 교과서에 실린 사진들에 매료(魅了)됐던 것. (*자유의 여신상을 포함 엠파이어 스테이트 빌딩, 링컨 대통령 기념관, 워싱턴광장, 유엔빌딩, 시카고의 윌리스 타워와 뉴욕의 쌍둥이 빌딩(2001. 9.11테러로 사라짐), 알링턴 국립묘지, 샌프란시스코 금문교와 언덕의 전차, 백악관과 국회의사당, 옐로스톤 국립공원 외 요세미티, 그랜드캐년, 데스밸리, 레드우드 국립공원과 슈피리어호수, 애리조나 사막 등. 특히 기억에 가장 강력하고 오래 남는 곳은 버지니아의 셰넌도어 국립공원과 노스캐롤라이나의 체로키인디언 마을과 역시 그곳의 제82 공수사단 부대이다.
미국의 국립공원들은 말이 공원이지 하나의 나라처럼 거대하다(한국 개념으로 공원 하면 도보徒步로 길어야 2~3일이면 족하지만, 이곳의 블루리지 산과 애팔래치아 산에 있는 공원들은 자동차로 하루 종일 달려도 못 다 본다. 고맙게도 나는 이 두 곳을 미국인 친구들 자동차로 그들의 얘길 들어가면서 온종일 여유롭게 구경했다. 또 하나 빼놓을 수 없는 것 중 하나는 노스캐롤라이나에 있는 군부대(軍部隊) 구경이다. 이 역시 친구의 덕택이었다. 이곳은 제82 공수사단으로 전 세계에 알려진, 미육군(美陸軍) 역사상 가장 명성과 공적이 뛰어난 최정예 부대이다. 미국은 한국과 달리 대부분의 군부대가 일반인들에게도 개방돼 있다. 공수병(空輸特戰團)들이 단체로 조깅과 행진을 할 때 외치는 힘찬 구호는 하늘을 찌르 듯했다. 나도 군생활 때 해 본 것이지만 느낌은 완전히 달랐다. 병력도 그렇지만 모든 시설 등의 규모 면에서 비교 불가였기 때문이다. 영내(營內)에 버스가 있는데 한 바퀴 도는데 약 1시간이 걸린다는 말에 포기했다.
**오늘 얘기는 미국에서 내가 경험한 여러 가지 알바(잔디 깎기, 수영장 청소, 대리운전, 리쿼스토어-술 소도매상, 세탁소) 가운데 세븐일레븐(*메릴랜드 프레더릭)에서 일주일 동안 일하면서 보고 듣고 느낀 점이다. (*나는 예나 지금이나 직접 경험을 우선優先한다. 그래서인지 남 얘기나 비경험非經驗적 얘긴 싫어한다). 암튼 근무시간은 밤 10시부터 아침 7시까지. 시간당 6불(요즘은 15불). 이 시간대는 위험해서 인기가 없다. 더 인기가 없는 곳은 리쿼스토어. 이곳은 일종의 술 대리점인데, 툭하면 권총 강도가 나타나기에 목숨을 거는 곳이다(*이곳에서 딱 한 시간 경험함. 며칠 전에도 총소리가 났던 곳.)
이곳 메릴랜드의 프레더릭이란 곳은 비교적 평온한 곳이다. 그러나 어디나 그렇지만 밤이 되면 좀 긴장되는 건 마찬가지. 만약의 경우를 대비해 권총도 준비돼 있었다. 다행히 이곳은 지난 10여 년간 아무 사고도 없던 곳이었다. 새벽 3시쯤 되면 손님들이 가게 앞에 있는 휘발유 급유기로 자기 차에 기름을 채운 뒤 들어오기 시작한다. 간단한 인사를 나눈 뒤 주문을 받는다. 대부분 선반에 있는 빵, 쿠키, 타퀴토 등은 본인이 골라 계산대로 가져오지만, 커피는 주문을(지금은 셀프임) 받아 내가 컵에 일일이 받아 건네준다. 음식 이름도 많지만 커피도 장난이 아니다. 블랙부터, 카푸치노, 비엔나, 모카 등 7가지 이상이었다. 그냥 주는 대로 커피만 달랑 받아 마시고 가는 친구들이 있는가 하면, 커피에 크림을 넣어달라거나 하프앤하프(크림+우유)를 부탁하는 까다로운 친구들도 있었다.
아침 7시 전에 유통기한이 다 된 식료품(*주로 빵)을 가게 앞에 내놓는다. 당시(1989)에도 유통기한 엄수는 철저했다. 미국은 모든 것이 다 그렇지만 특히 식품에 대해선 엄격하다. 잠시 후 내다보면 다 사라졌다. 실제로 먹는 덴 아무 지장이 없다는 걸 다 알기 때문이다. 미국인들이 얼마나 실용적이며 부지런한지 나는 알바를 통해서 확인했다. 혹자들은 말한다. 미국은 축복받은 나라라고. 그 말 속엔 미국인들은 대충 살아도 잘 먹고 잘산다는 뜻이 포함된다. 돈이 거저 굴러들어 온 줄 안다. 천만의 말씀. 그래서 나는 항상 직접 경험을 해 본 자와 그렇지 않은 자의 말과 글을 구분해 본다.

People met on my backpacking 225 - My part-time work in the US taught me about American culture.
For approximately a year, I had complete freedom in the United States, the world's most free and biggest country. Since I was a youngster, I've lived at Busan's harbor, where large foreign ships dock. I was attracted by the images in secondary school English textbooks. (*The Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the Lincoln Presidential Memorial, Washington Square, the UN Building, the Arlington National Cemetery, San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, the White House and Capitol Hill, Yellowstone National Park, Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, Death Valley, and Redwood.) Some of the most powerful and lasting sites are Schenandore National Park in Virginia, Cherokee Indian Village in N. Carolina, and the 82nd Airborne Division in N. Carolina.
The United States' national parks are beyond comprehension. Even if you spend one week, it would be difficult to see the parks in the Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountains. Fortunately, I was able to see these two locations while driving with my American friends. Another thing I'll never forget is the military tour in N. Carolina. The 82nd Airborne Division is a highly regarded and successful organization in US military history. The scale of all the facilities and personnel here was enormous. I gave up when I was told there was a bus in the compound that took approximately an hour to get around.
**The topic today is about a variety of part-time jobs that I held in the USA. Here's what I saw, heard, and felt while working at 7-Eleven (*Maryland Frederick) for a week. (*I always prefer hands-on experience. I despise listening to folks who have little experience. Anyway, the job hours were from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. It's unpopular since it involved risk. The less popular spot was the Liquor Store. It's because pistol robberies were common. (*I only spent an hour here, where a gunshot was fired a few days earlier.)
Frederick, Maryland, was a pretty quiet community. Around 3 a.m., people began to enter the store after filling their automobiles with gasoline from the dispenser in front of it. They largely picked out the bread and cookies from the stand and carried them to the counter, but ordered their coffee to me. There were various names for foods, but there were also different types of coffee. From black to cappuccino, Vienna to mocha. Some friends just sipped the coffee I served them, while others insisted on cream or half-and-half.
I set out expired items (mostly bread) in front of the shop before 7 a.m. Back then (1989), they were very strict too. When I looked back after a bit, they were all gone. It was because they knew the bread wasn't very harmful. Through part-time jobs, I was able to validate Americans' practicality and diligence. Some say that America is a blessed country. It may mean that Americans don't work hard. They might think that Americans live comfortably for free. That is ridiculous. So I don't trust folks who have no experience on their own.
