여행 중 만난 사람들(230)-대한민국 성공을 반대하는 자들의 한글 우수성 주장은 다 거짓말이다. <한글의 우수성, 어떻게 전달할 것인가?>

사실 우린 비행기를 타고 한반도(韓半島)만 벗어나면, 아니 비행기를 타는 순간 곧 피부에 와 닿는 것이 있다. 우선 눈으로 먼저 확인된다. 바로 얼굴의 다양한 모습과 피부색이다. 그도 잠깐, 우린 곧 이번엔 눈이 아니라 귀가 혼란스럽다. 여기저기서 들려오는 소리가 외국어, 그것도 영어가 대부분이다. 이때야 비로소 우리는 "아하, 진짜, 영어란 놈이 세계공통어가 맞구먼“이라고 인정한다.

이때 우린 고민(苦悶)한다. “난 영어를 못하니 입 꽉 닫고 조용히 있는 게 낫겠군. 평소 한국어가 이 세상에서 가장 배우기 쉬운 과학적 언어라고 큰소리를 쳤던 게 조금 멋쩍네. 영어 한마디 못해도 세계 여행하는 데 아무 지장(支障) 없다고 했는데, 막상 부딪쳐보니 그게 아니군.”이라며 뒤늦게 깨닫는다. 늦다고 생각할 때가 가장 빠르다는 교훈을 되새기며 이번 여행을 마치고 돌아가면 이를 악물고 영어를 해야겠다고 다짐한다. “근데 뭐부터 하지? 읽고 쓰고 듣고 말하기를 다 해야 한다는데, 그것 참 골치 아프네. 애라, 모르겠다. 까짓것 구글 번역기를 돌리지 뭐.”

세계 여행을 하면서 영어, 특히 말하는 영어의 중요성을 절실히 느끼는 곳이 바로 게스트하우스다. 영어만 통하는 곳이기 때문이다. 이들 가운데 영어 원어민(原語民)인 영국인 미국인 호주인 뉴질랜드인 캐나다인 등은 전체로 보면 약 20~30% 내외(內外)다. 대부분이 비영어권(非英語圈)인 나라의 여행자들이다. 그들 가운덴 속된 말로 자존심(自尊心) 하나로 세계를 지배한 스페인 프랑스 독일 일본 스페인계의 젊은이들이 다수(多數)를 차지한다.

그러나 그들은 자기 나라말인 불어나 독어 이태리어 혹은 일본어나 스페인어를 고집하지 않는다. 아니 내색조차도 하지 않는다. 한다고 들어 줄 사람도 없다. 대신 자연스럽게 영어를 사용한다. 그런데 우리 한국인들은 국내외(國內外)를 막론하고 한국어가 세계 제일의 문자(文字)라고 겉으로 드러낸다. 답답한 것은 그것을 외부에, 자기 주변의 외국인들에게 증명(證明)하지도 못하면서 우리끼리만 주장하고 있다는 것이다.

그 증명이란 게 별건가. 오늘날 국경(國境) 없는 지구촌을 살아가면서 세계인과 만나 대화를 나누면서 자연스럽게 한국에 관한 문화를 얘기하다 보면 한글의 우수성(優秀性)도 자동으로 전달된다. 그러나 현실은 어떠한가, 그저 우물 안에 꽁꽁 틀어박혀서 그도 모자라 국내의 우물을 통째로 들어다 외국에 옮겨놓고 또 그 안에서 끼리끼리 비집고 들어앉아 그저 우리끼리만 한글이 세계 제일이라 한다. 영어는 의도적으로 무시한다. 기가 막힐 노릇 아닌가.

물론이다. 한국어는 가장 과학적이고 실용적인 위대한 문자다. 그래서 우리는 한글의 우수성(優秀性)을 세계인에게 알려야 한다. 그러나, 과연 누가 언제 어떻게 알릴 것인가. 그 수단이 문제이다. 문자언어(文字言語)든 음성언어(音聲言語)든 결국 가장 효율적인 수단은 영어를 사용하는 것이다. 영어 외에 다른 어떤 대안이 없는 상황에서 우리는 아직도 한글 타령만 하고 있다. 한글의 70%를 차지하는 한자(漢字)도 버리고 한글 전용화(專用化)했다. 글은 읽되 뜻은 모르는, 그래서 대충 눈치로 얼버무리는 겉똑똑이들만 양산(量產)한 결과를 낳았다.

여러분들은 외국에 나가면 아니 국내에서라도 간혹 외국인들을 만날 때 한국말의 우수성을 얘기해 본 적이 있는가? 있다면 어떻게 했는가? 한국어로? 일어로? 몸짓으로? 필담(筆談)으로? 아예, 시도(試圖)할 생각도 안 해 봤고 해 볼 생각도 없다고? 그 골치 아픈 걸 왜 자신이 해야 하느냐고?

그럴 수도 있다. 그렇다면 그 마음만은 진실(眞實)이라면 즉, 자신이 직접 할 수 없는 영역이라면, 그 분야에 소질(素質)이 없다면, 자기 대신 그 역할을 할 수 있는 다른 사람들에게 용기와 격려를 해주는 것이 옳지 않은가. 이것도 저것도 마다한다면 결국 자신이 주장한 한글의 우수성 발언은 자기기만(自己欺瞞)이고 위선(僞善)이다. 한글의 우수성을 주장할 근거도 권리도 없다. *사실 나는 정확히 30년 전에도 국내에서 그리고 인도(印度) 등 외국에서 한글만 고집하는 사람들과 열띤 토론을 했었다. 그러나 아직 변한 것은 없다.

(*나는 이번에 스웨덴에서 한국에 여행 온 모자(母子)를 만나 얘기를 나누던 중 그 아들의 질문에 답하면서 한글의 우수성을 어떻게 더 효율적(效率的)으로 전달할 것인가를 다시 한번 생각해 보았다.)

People met on my backpacking(230) - The brilliance of Hangul should be described in English.

In reality, when we board an airline and leave the Korean Peninsula, we witness different characteristics and skin tones on people's faces. We quickly find ourselves puzzled about hearing rather than sight. We hear foreign tongues here and there. The majority of them are English. It is only then that we realize, "Aha, truly, English is the most common language in the world.“

And they think, since they don't know English, they should keep their mouth shut and be quiet. They feel embarrassed about the brilliance of Korean, which they have always preached on. They stated that even if they don't speak a word of English, it would be acceptable for them to tour the world. That's not true. They now realize that they will learn English when they return home from this trip. But they fail again. Instead, they decide to use Google Translate.

While traveling throughout the world, it is at a guesthouse that I realize the value of knowing English in particular. This is because English is the sole language spoken there. Only roughly 20 to 30 percent are British Americans who speak English as their native language. The majority of them are backpackers from non-English-speaking nations. The bulk of them are young people from Spain, France, Germany, Japan, and Spain, who have once ruled the world with their singular strength and pride.

However, they don't insist on their native tongue, whether English, Japanese, or Spanish. Instead, they communicate in English naturally. However, we Koreans believe that the Korean alphabet is the greatest in the world, both domestically and internationally. Surprisingly, very few can prove it to the foreigners around them.

It's simple to prove. When we meet and converse with individuals from all over the world, we instantly demonstrate Korea's culture and the quality of Hangeul. The truth, however, is far different. Koreans insist on it just in their small room. The same holds true in other countries. Only Koreans actively neglect English, claiming that Hangul is the greatest in the world. It's embarrassing.

Of course. Korean is the most scientific and practical alphabet. That is why we need to spread the word about Hangul's greatness. But who will tell it when and how? After all, the most effective method is to utilize English. There are no other options except English. The Korean government has also eliminated Chinese characters, which make about 70% of Hangul. As a result, Koreans are generating a large number of false intellectuals who can read but don't understand what they read.

Have you ever discussed the Korean language's quality with foreigners, even those at home? If so, how? In Korean? Japanese? By gesture? By writing? You never thought of attempting it?

That may be true. If you are not strong in the field, you should urge others to take on the role instead of you. If you don't, you'll wind up deceiving yourself and being hypocritical. *Actually, I've had furious conversations with folks who only insisted on Hangeul precisely 30 years ago, both at home and abroad, including India. However, nothing has changed yet.
