나는 일찍이 세상 일에 관심이 많았다. 만국기(萬國旗)를 달고 부산항에 입출항하는 거대한 외항선(外航船)을 보고 자랐다. 방화(邦畫)보다는 외화(外畫)를 더 많이 봤다. 솔직히 국사(國史)보다는 세계사가 더 재미있었다. 동양(중국)사보다는 서양(유럽)사가 더 흥미진진하고 스릴이 있었다. 확 트인 대평원에서 벌어진 장대(張大)한 스케일에 박진감 넘치는 전쟁사(칸나이 전투, 마렝고 전투, 워털루 전투 등)를 읽었다. 읽으면 읽을수록 상상력을 자극했다. 영화로 보면 볼수록 현장감이 생동했고 그곳에 가고 싶었다.

물론 이는 나 개인적 성격이고 취향이고 가치관이다. ‘예스’ ‘노’가 분명하다. 솔직하고 개방적이다. 행동 지향적이고 탐구적이다. 약속과 책임감을 중히 여긴다. 대화 속에 진리가 있다고 믿는다. 절대자 신(神)을 믿는다. 반면에 거짓말과 욕을 입에 달고 사는 사람, 감사할 줄 모르는 배은망덕한 자들, 정정당당히 결투(전쟁)로 승부를 내기보다는 숨어서 음모(陰謀)와 기만(欺瞞)과 모략(謀略)으로 이익만 챙기는 비겁하고 야비한 인간들, 항상 남 탓하고 피해의식에 절어 사는 노예근성의 사람들과는 본질적으로 나와 결이 맞지 않는다.

이를 평화론으로 비유하자면 전자(前者)는 ‘평화를 원하면(주인답게 살려면) 전쟁을 준비하라’에 해당하고, 후자(後者)는 “아무리 더러운 평화라도 이기는 전쟁보다는 낫다” 즉, 빌어먹고 사는 종(노예의 삶)이라도 괜찮다는 쪽이다. 이들은 한 마디로 한국이 망해 김정은 밑에서 살아도 괜찮고 또 중공의 습근평에게 손바닥 비비고 ‘쎄쎄’하며 사는 굴욕적 삶을 살아도 좋다는 것이다. 전자는 ‘크라우제비츠’의 ‘전쟁론’(On War)에 해당하고, 후자는 ‘손자’의 '병법론‘에 해당한다.

전자는 힘의 논리(군사력)로 정면 대결을 불사(不辭)하고, 후자는 정공법(正攻法)을 피한다. 비겁하게 숨어서 온갖 계략(기습전, 게릴라전, 위장술)으로 싸우지 않고 이기려 한다. 그 비열하고 천박한 버릇은 지금, 이 순간에도 일어나고 있다. 한국은 물론 미국 등 세계 곳곳에 심어놓은 저들의 간첩(해커)들이다. 핵으로 불바다를 만들겠다거나 사드 배치를 말라거나 우리 해역(海域, 서해)에 마구 침범 고기와 게를 싹쓸이하는 대규모 불법 조업 등 도적질을 마구 해댄다. 2천 년 넘게 해온 야만적 주권침해다. 이는 저들이 수천 년 동안 전략 전술로 악용해 온 손자병법의 기만적 술수(術數)다. 덩칫값도 못 하는 골목대장과 전혀 다르지 않다.

살다 보니 어느 날 꿈에나 있을 법한 기회가 왔다. 그간 머릿속에 저장해 둔 세계사에 등장하는 굵직굵직한 사건·사고의 현장을 일일이 찾아갔다. (*이집트 고대 박물관도, 루마니아의 차우셰스쿠 궁전도, 칠레의 피노체트 궁전도 같은 개념이다.)

마침내 그 역사의 현장에 서서 시간여행(時間旅行)에 흠뻑 빠져든다. 그러나 나는 그 기쁨과 감흥으로 끝나지 않는다. 반드시 그 주변(거리, 식당, 가게)의 현지인에게 그 역사에 관해서 물어본다. 그들은 예외 없이 진지하게 답했다. 자부심이 가득했다. 역사적 사실<역사책>과 상관없이 그랬다. 나름대로 먼 옛날 한때 세상을 호령했던 위대한 조상을 둔 후예들의 공통점이자 긍지였다(*그리스, 이태리, 몽골, 스페인, 터키, 네덜랜드, 영국, 프랑스 등). 보기 좋았다. 부러웠다.

내가 튀니지 여행 중 한니발 장군과 스키피오 장군이 마지막 승부수를 띄운 현장인 ‘자마’ 전투장에 갔을 때였다. 주변에 있던 식당에 들어갔다. 현지인들 몇 명이 있었다. 내가 ‘한니발 장군’에 관해 물었을 때 그들은 하나같이 말했다. 한니발 장군보다 더 위대한 영웅은 이 세상에 없다고. (*이는 마치 경주의 대릉원(大陵園)에 가서 주변의 현지인 아무에게나 신라(新羅)의 태종 무열왕(武烈王)과 문무왕(文武王) 그리고 김유신(金庾信) 장군에 관해 물으면 주저 없이 그 위대한 3인의 영웅담을 풀어놓는 것과 같다.) 이는 인류 문명과 더불어 발전한 고대사, 중세사, 근현대사를 총괄한 개념이다.

나는 1980년대 미·소(美·蘇) 냉전 시대가 미국의 승리로 끝나가는 과정을 흥미롭게 지켜봤다. 특히 폴란드(1989-바웬사 공산당과 협상 성공), 헝가리(1989-민주화의 상징적 존재인 ‘너지 임레’의 장례식), 동독(1989 베를린 장벽 붕괴), 체코슬로바키아(1989 비공산주의 정부 수립), 불가리아(1989 독재자 지프코프 실각), 루마니아(1989 차우셰스쿠 정권 붕괴) 등이 하나씩 무너지는 순간을 놓치지 않았다. 급속히 확산되는 민주화운동이었다. 그리고 어느 날 공산주의 체제는 우르르 무너지기 시작했다. 물론 소련도 무너졌다. (*소련의 공식 해체, 1991. 12. 26.) 이 과정을 통틀어 '1989년 혁명' 또는 '공산주의의 몰락'으로 명명(命名)했다.

(*나는 베를린 장벽이 무너진 현장을 보기 위해 달려갔다. 통독(1990)에 이어 설마 했던 공산주의 종주국 소련도 무너졌다. 그러자 루마니아의 독재자 차우셰스쿠 등 동유럽의 공산권 모두도 약속이나 한 듯 거의 동시에 무너졌다. 드디어 자유를 얻었다. 나는 역시 이들 나라가 민주화되자마자 기대 반 두려움 반으로 찾아갔다. 공산국가에 대한 부정적 이미지가 너무 강했기 때문이다. 역시 그랬다. 기대와는 달리 이들은 여전히 공산주의 구습(舊習)에서 벗어나지 못하고 있었다. 식당에 가나, 구멍가게에 가나 숙박소에 가나 음습(陰濕)한 통제 분위기 그대로였다. 다들 초라한 모습에 빈약한 시설과 조잡한 상품들(50~60년대 한국 모습)뿐이었다. 한편, 공교롭게도 지구 반대편의 칠레도 동시대(1991)에 ‘피의 독재자’로 불렸던 피노체트도 실각했다. 그리자 나는 얼마 후 피노체트의 궁전에도 찾아갔다. 그 공포의 현장을 직접 보고 듣기 위해서. 공산주의 독재자가 얼마나 무섭고 두려운 공포의 존재인가를 피상적(皮相的)으로나마 느껴 보고 싶어서.)

People met on my backpacking (238) - I know as much as I see, and I see as much as I understand.

Early on, I had a keen interest in international politics. Grew up watching huge foreign ships entering and leaving Busan Port under the national flag. Compared to Korean films, I viewed more foreign ones. I must admit that I found world history to be more fascinating than national history. Compared to Oriental (Chinese) history, Western (European) history was more fascinating and exciting. My imagination grew more active the more I read about the history of combat in the wide-open Great Plains, including the Battle of Kannai, the Battle of Marengo, the Battle of Waterloo, and others. I felt more real the longer I watched the film.

Naturally, they are my own values, preferences, and personalities. I can tell 'Yes' or 'No' with ease. I am forthright and honest. I am curious and action-oriented. I respect accountability and promise. I think that dialogue contains truth. In God I believe. However, I detest such guys: ungrateful, the cowardly and mean who hide and prosper only from conspiracy, deception, and planning instead of making a battle (war) fair and square, the people who live in a victimhood mindset by placing blame on others, and the ones who live with lies and curses on their lips.

This may be summed up as the idea of peace: 'If you want peace (if you want to live like a master), prepare for war,' according to the former, and 'No matter how dirty peace is, it is better than winning war,' which means that slave life is acceptable. To put it briefly, they can live under Kim Jong-un following the fall of Korea and spend a degrading life of 'thank you' to the Chinese Communist Party leader. The former is equivalent to Crowzeitz's 'On War,' while the latter is equivalent to 'Sonja's Military Law.“

While the latter steers clear of direct confrontation, the former attempts to use the logic of power (military strength) to go head-to-head. They use a variety of tactics (surprise, guerilla, and camouflage) to try to win without engaging in combat while hiding cowardly. These cruel and superficial behaviors are occurring immediately and right now. They were placed in Korea, the United States, and other countries by hackers. By warning Korea not to use THAAD on the Korean Peninsula and threatening to use its nuclear weapons to create a sea of fire, they are violating our sovereignty.

One day, I was granted a chance I could only dream about. I went to all the important events and disasters in world history that I had stored in my mind. (* Ancient Egyptian museums, Romania's Ceausescu Palace, Chile's Pinochet Palace, etc.)

Finally, I stand at the site of that history and participate in time travel. And I always ask the individuals who live nearby about that history. Each and every one of them responded honestly. They were proud. Historical facts have nothing to do with the information. This characteristic was shared and proudly shown by the descendants of their great forebears who once dominated the world (*Greece, Italy, Mongolia, Spain, Turkey, the Netherlands, England, France, etc.). It was pleasant to see. I'm jealous of them.

General Hannibal and General Scipio I visited the Zama battlefield, where their last successful maneuver took place, when I was in Tunisia. I walked inside the next-door cafe. Some locals were present. They replied that when I inquired about General Hannibal. General Hannibal is the greatest hero in the world. (*It would be similar to asking everyone in the vicinity about the monarchs who brought about the unification of Silla at a sizable Wangneung complex in Gyeongju, the historic capital of Silla, the root, cradle of modern-day Korea.)

I found it fascinating to observe the 1980s triumph of the U.S.-Soviet Cold War. I was soon present when Poland, Hungary, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, and Romania fell apart one after the other. Among them, the democratic movement was expanding quickly. The communist regime then started to fall apart one day. Naturally, the Soviet Union fell apart as well. (*The Soviet Union's formal breakup on December 26, 1991)

(*I hurried to see the Berlin Wall's collapse. A communist suzerain state, the Soviet Union, fell apart with the reunification of Germany in 1990. Then, almost simultaneously, as if they had promised, all of Eastern Europe's communist regions fell. At last, they were free. I visited their places. little shops, or hotels, etc.They were all run-down, with poor facilities and basic merchandise . Fortunately, I could feel the terror of a communist despot on a superficial level.)
