세상엔 참으로 희귀(稀貴)한 유적지가 많다. 인간의 손으로 만들었다는 게 놀라울 뿐이다. 중국의 진시황릉을 비롯해 로마의 카타콤과 터키의 카파도키아 등 고대로부터 지하에 왕릉 혹은 수도원과 기도원 그리고 지하묘(地下墓) 등을 만들어 놓은 곳들이 그렇다.
물론 지난 100년 안팎에 구축(構築)된 유명한 지하 벙커 또한 많다. 나치 독일의 퓌러 벙커, 영국 처칠의 지하 벙커, 소련의 스탈린이 사용한 지하 벙커 그리고 무솔리니의 비밀 벙커 등 한둘이 아니다.
그러나 지금까지 내가 직접 그 현장에 가서 살펴본 지하(地下)의 시설(구축)물 가운데 가장 정교(精巧)하고 견고(堅固)하게 건설된 지하 벙커(왕릉, 수도원, 묘)는 태평양전쟁(太平洋戰爭) 때 일본 오키나와 지하에 건설된 일본해군 지하사령부였다.
이곳 오키나와의 구(舊) 일본해군 지하 벙커는 1945년 태평양전쟁 후반기 오키나와 지역에서 벌어진 전투를 지휘한 곳이다. 현재 이곳은 당시 사용했던 지하 벙크가 그대로 남아 있다. 미로(迷路)처럼 연결되어 있다. 당시 미군이 오키나와로 공격해 오자, 일본군은 일반 민간인까지 동원해 전투에 투입했다. 그 때문에 더 많은 민간인 희생자들이 발생했다. 이곳에서만 약 4000명이 사망했다고 한다.
물론 최종적으로 미국이 승리하긴 했지만, 미군 측도 일만 명 이상의 엄청난 피해를 보았다. 태평양전쟁 중 단일 전장(戰場)에서 미군 사상자 발생이 최다를 기록한 곳이다.
**우리가 묵고 있는 비즈니스호텔을 포함 내가 경험한 일본인들의 건축물은 크든 작든 대충 적당히 만들어 놓은 것이 없다. 견고하고 정밀하고 정확하다. 100여 년 전, 이곳 오키나와의 지하에 구축해 놓은 구 일본해군 사령부 내부를 꼼꼼히 살펴보면서 재확인했다.

There are several unusual historical places in the world. It amazes me that they were created by human hands. Examples include the Qin Shi Huang tombs in China, the Catacombs in Rome, and Cappadocia in Turkey, where royal tombs or monasteries, prayer rooms, and underground graves have been created since ancient.
Of course, numerous notable underground bunkers have been created throughout the last century. Examples include the Pure Bunker in Nazi Germany, the Underground Bunker in Churchill, England, the Underground Bunker utilized by Stalin in the Soviet Union, and Mussolini's Secret Bunker.
However, the most advanced and securely built below ground structure I've ever seen at the site was the old Japanese Naval subterranean Command, which was built below on Okinawa, Japan during the Pacific War.
The old Japanese navy underground bunker on Okinawa was where action occurred in the Okinawa area during the second part of the Pacific War in 1945. The subterranean bunk that was utilized at the time is still intact today. It's connected like a maze. When the United States military attacked Okinawa, the Japanese military gathered regular citizens and deployed them into war. As a result, additional civilian casualties occurred. It is believed that around 4,000 individuals died here alone.

Of course, the United States eventually won the war, but the US troops lost almost 10,000 individuals. It was the site of the most US losses on a single battlefield during the Pacific War.
**I think the Japanese architecture I have experienced, including the business hotel we are staying in, is very scientific. They are sturdy, precise, and accurate. I, more than 100 years ago, reconfirmed by carefully examining the inside of the former Japanese naval command they had built here underground in Okinawa.
