이상하지만, 보고 듣고 배운 경험이 없는 사람이 경험자를 이기는 곳이 한국 사회다. 이 또한 기적이라 할 수밖에 없다. (English version is below.)

나는 세계 여행을 통해 가능한 한 많은 나라의 사람들과 대화를 나누려고 노력했다. 영어사전은 필수였다. 오늘날은 스마트폰이면 만사 Ok이지만. 암튼 인간의 복잡다단한 세계는 대화를 통해서만 알 수 있고 풀 수 있다고 믿었기 때문이다. 나의 믿음은 옳았다. 만약 세계인들과 직접 대화를 해 보지 않았다면 내 능력으로는 왜 저들이 대한민국을 부러워하는지 알 수 없었다. 왜 나는 동시대에 태어난 그들보다 훨씬 축복받은 세대인지 알 수 없었다. 왜 대한민국은 계속 자유와 번영을 누리는 나라가 되어야 하는지를 실감할 수 없었다. 이 모든 걸 나는 대화를 통해서 깨달았다.

그리고 나는 그들로부터 몇 개의 공통점을 발견했다.

첫째: 억지와 고성(高聲)은 통하지 않는다는 것.
둘째: 토론에서 사실과 논리에 밀리면 솔직히 승복(承服)한다는 것.
셋째: 묻고 답하는 대화의 기본예절이 없는 자는 배척당한다는 것.

1. 한국 속담에 '사공(沙工)이 많으면 배가 산으로 간다.'라는 말이 있다.
*문제는 그 사공들이 실제로 배를 저어 본 적이 없다는 점이다.

2. '서울에 가본 사람이 서울에 가본 적이 없는 사람과 싸우면 서울에 가본 적이 없는 사람이 이긴다.'
*문제는 경험이 부족한 사람들이 전문성이 절대적으로 필요한 장관이나 국회의원 같은 정치인이 된다는 점이다.

3. '말싸움에서 져서 죽은 귀신은 절대 썩지도 않는다.'
*문제는 그들이 우물 안 개구리에 불과하다는 것이다. 바다가 그들을 받아들인다 해도 그들은 적응할 수 없다는 점이다.

결론:이상하지만, 보고 듣고 배운 경험이 없는 사람이 경험자를 이기는 곳이 한국 사회다. 그래도 우리나라는 세계가 부러워하는 자랑스런 대한민국임이 틀림없다. 세계인들과의 대화를 통해 수없이 직접 확인했다. 그래서 나는 이 또한 기적 아닌 기적이라 할 수밖에 없다.

Here's what I've learned from my backpacking to the world.

Talking to people from all walks of life has been one of my goals of backpacking to the world. The English dictionary was a must for me then. Yes, everything is OK with a smartphone today. Anyway, I've strongly believed that the complicated human beings could only be known and solved through dialogue. I was right. If I had not talked directly with them, how come I could realize why they envious of the Republic of Korea. Impossible for me to feel why I was a much more blessed generation than they were. I couldn't wake up why my country, Korea should continue to be on freedom and prosperity. Right, I realized all this through conversation.

And I found something in common from them.

1. Irrational insistence and loud voices don't work.
2. They accept the result willingly when they lose the debate of the facts and logic.
3. Those who don't have the basic manners of asking and answering rule are not welcomed.

There're some Korean proverbs that say;

1. Too many boatmen, the boat goes to the mountain. (Too many cooks spoil the broth.)
*The problem is that the boatmen have never rowed the boat.

2. If one who has been to Seoul fights with the other who’s never been to Seoul, the person who’s never been to Seoul wins.
*The problem is that inexperienced people become politicians such as ministers and lawmakers who absolutely need expertise.

3. Ghosts who have lost an argument and died never rot.
*The problem is that they are nothing but frogs in a well (echo-chamber). Even if the sea accept them they can't adapt it.

Conclusion:It's Korean society where people who have no experience of seeing, hearing, and learning win over the experts. Nevertheless, in my view, it’s true that today's Korea is one of the most proud countries that the world envious of. So I call Korea not explainable country rather than a real miracle one.
