■ 美 해군 특수부대 네이비실 팀에 사살된 빈 라덴이 프리메이슨 음모론을 포함해 다양한 음모론 관련 서적을 탐독했던 것으로 알려졌다.

美 국가정보국(ODNI)은 최근 빈 라덴을 사살하는 과정에서 입수한 각종 서적과 문건-편지 등 400여건을 공개했다. 그가 보유했던 서적의 상당수가 음모론과 관련된 것이었다고 한다.

대표적으로 프리메이슨의 혈통 관계를 다룬 <일루미나티의 혈통>을 포함, 영국의 음모론 이론가인 존 콜먼이 쓴 <300인 위원회>, 조지 W. 부시 행정부가 9·11 테러를 공모했을 수 있다는 주장을 담은 <새로운 진주만: 부시 행정부와 9·11에 관한 혼란스러운 질문들> 등이 있었다.

영어로 저술된 책 중에는 미국의 패권전략을 분석한 <패권이냐 생존이냐>, 미국의 여론 조작문제를 다룬 <필요한 환상> 등이 있었다. 이외에도 역사학자 폴 케네디가 지난 5세기 동안 열강의 경제·군사력 성쇠를 다룬 <강대국의 흥망>, 워터게이트 특종기자 밥 우드워드가 버락 오바마 미국 대통령의 아프가니스탄 철군 전략을 기술한 <오바마의 전쟁>도 있었다.

美 정보기관은 빈 라덴의 은신처에서 누드 사진 등 다량의 포르노그래피도 수거한 것으로 알려졌다. 그러나 ODNI는 포르노그래피는 일반에 공개할 내용이 아닌 만큼 비밀해제 대상에서 제외된 것으로 알려졌다.

■ 정치학의 한 분야로 자리 잡은 ‘음모론’(陰謀論, conspiracy theory)은 주로 사회적 혼란기에 유포된다. 음모론은 잘 설명되지 않는 사건을 설명할 때 매력적인 대안으로 떠오른다.

잘 알려진 음모론 중에 ‘MK-ULTRA’ 프로젝트의 경우 사실로 밝혀졌다. 대략적인 내용은 과거 CIA가 마인드 컨트롤(Mind Control) 기술을 연구했다는 것인데, 1974년 뉴욕타임즈를 통해 폭로되고, 1975년 美의회가 조사해 실제로 있었던 사실로 드러났다.

이외에도 2차 세계 대전 이후 미국의 나치(Nazi) 과학자 구출 계획으로 알려진 ‘페이퍼 클립 작전’(Operation Paperclip)의 경우도 사실로 밝혀졌다. 이 작전은 美전략사무국(OSS)이 1945년부터 1946년까지 패전한 나치 독일 과학자 수백 명을 미국으로 데려와 독일의 첨단 과학기술을 연구하는 것이 목적이었다. 

음모론은 미제의 사건을 다룰 때 ‘그럴듯한’ 대안이 된다. 음모론이기 때문에 증명할 필요가 없다는 주장은 잘못된 생각이다. 음모론을 제기하는 쪽과 음모론을 비판하는 쪽 모두 객관적·과학적·논리적 방법을 동원해야 하는 것은 말할 것도 없다. 인간의 본성이라 할 수 있는 ‘의심’이 사라지지 않는 한 음모론은 끊임없이 확대-재생산된다.

음모론은 그 어떤 소설보다 흥미진진하다. 바로 이것이 음모론이 끼치는 '해악'이다.
