유네스코가 지정한 세계 문화 유산이 가장 많은 나라는 어디일까. 많은 사람들이 로마와 르네상스 문화의 본산인 이탈리아일 것이라고 생각한다. 半만 맞는 이야기이다.

이탈리아의 세계문화 유산이 36개, 교황청과 이탈리아가 공동소유한 것이 하나, 합치면 37개이다. 스페인은 37개이고 프랑스와 스페인의 공동관할이 1개, 합치면 38개이므로 1위이다. 세계문화유산은 앞으로 계속해서 지정되므로 순위는 유동적이다. 스페인은 기독교 문명의 유산뿐 아니라 약700년간 이곳을 통치했던 이슬람 문명의 유산도 함께 갖고 있다.

이슬람 세력을 추방했던 스페인 사람들이 적들이 남긴 건축물들을 부수지 않았기 때문에 후손들이 덕을 보고 있다. 미국을 제외하면 스페인의 관광수입이 가장 많다. 스페인 사람들이 이교도의 건축물들을 때려부수지 않은 이유는 여럿이겠지만 가장 결정적인 것은 알함브라 궁전 등 이슬람이 남긴 건물들이 너무나 아름다웠기 때문이다. 아름다움은 스스로를 보호할 수 있는 힘이 있는 것이다.
한국에서는 이 법칙이 통용되지 않는다. 한국의 가장 아름다운 건축물이었던 옛 중앙청 건물은 金泳三 대통령의 명령으로 파괴되었다. 아름다움을 이해할 수 없는 권력자에게는 萬事가 무효이다.

세계문화유산 3위는 29개의 중국, 4위는 28개의 프랑스, 5위는 27개의 독일, 6위는 26개의 영국이다. 7위는 24개의 인도, 8위는 23개의 멕시코, 9위는 20개(캐나다와 공유한 것이 2개 포함)의 미국, 10위는 17개의 러시아이다. 10대 문화유산 국가의 목록을 소개한다.

ㅇ 이 루트는 산티아고 데 콜포스텔라로 가는 순례자 길이며 길가에는 1,800여개의 건축물이 즐비하게 늘어서 있고 종교적 또는 세속적으로도 매우 역사적 가치가 높은 유적임
