Subject: Mr. President, it is now or never!
August 1, 2003
President George W. Bush
The White House
Washington, D.C.
Dear Mr. President:
I am a Korean-American human rights activist living in Philadelphia. I have written many letters to you about the desperate North Korean refugees in China and the starving people in North Korea in the past two years. I have been through a lot. I was overjoyed when I saved some refugees, and then I was near total despair when I saw some refugees disappear and evaporate from the face of the earth. I know that some one to two thousand people die of starvation in North Korea everyday. I always believed that this tragedy, nay genocide, would never end unless you, Mr. President, intervene and get rid of the North Korea dictator, Kim Jong-il. You, Vice President Cheney, Dr. Rice, and Secretary Rumsfeld have been steady enough that now Kim Jong-il finally broke down and accepted the multinational conference for no nuclear in North Korea. It was you, not South Korea, not China, not Russia, who pulled it through. You now have Kim Jong-il exactly where you wanted him; cornered and desperate. Out of desperation, he wants a guarantee on his regime. Roh Moo-hyun of South Korea also wants the same thing; a guarantee on the life of a butcher. I am sure that China and Russia will talk about the same thing at the conference table. Kim Jong-il should be guaranteed his neck. No! Mr. President. Never!
Kim Jong-il massacred over 3 million people of his own by starvation and execution. Kim Jong-il imprisoned and put over 4 hundred thousand of his own people in the concentration camps to a very slow painful deaths. Kim Jong-il tested his biochemical weapons of mass destruction on his own people. Kim Jong-il abducted close to five hundred innocent people from South Korea since the Korean War ended. Kim Jong-il blasted a commercial airplane in midair carrying innocent South Korean workers returning home from Germany. Kim Jong-il at a dinner table asked a high-ranking government official husband to kill his own wife with a gun, simply because he heard that the lady complained about the depravity of Kim Jong-il to her husband in private. Kim Jong-il imprisoned thousands of the refugees, who fled to China in search of food but were repatriated by China. I have hundreds of letters from the refugees who said they looked up to him as a father but came to hate him as someone who killed a father, a mother, a wife, a husband, a brother, a sister, and their children. I saw no refugees who did not lose one or two, or all of his or her family members. Kim Jong-il is as bad as Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, or Mao Tse Tung. Proportionately, he killed more of his people than any butchers in history. No! He cannot be guaranteed his neck!
Mr. President, I do not trust the current political leaders of my own country, South Korea. They have been working with Kim Jong-il against you. They have been trying to subvert the democracy in South Korea. They teach the school children to hate you and call you an imperialistic warmonger. They call Kim Jong-il a sensible partner for the unification of Korea. One member of the National Assembly called you the Root of the Evil. Kim Dae-jung bribed Kim Jong-il for the summit meeting and the Nobel Peace Award with at least half a billion dollars. Sunshine Policy was the biggest hoax and conspiracy with the evil in the history of Korea. Roh Moo-hyun is still sending foods for the North Korean military. Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun have been every step of the way against you and the U.S. Some of their followers publicly stated it would be a good thing that Kim Jong-il develops the nuclear weapons for Korea. Do not trust these traitors!
I do not trust China or Russia either. China has been trading with the U.S. and South Korea in the past ten to twenty years, but they are still a communist country. Human rights condition in China is still deplorable. They have repatriated tens of thousand North Korean refugees knowing well that they would end up in the infamous political prisons or even at the execution firing squad. China wants North Korea to be the same as before; the totalitarian regime threatening South Korea and the U.S. They could not care less how many people die in North Korea as long as this crisis is over. Russia is the same. They really don¡¯t give a damn about human rights or human lives. They may not want a nuclear North Korea, but that is all that matters to them. What would happen to the 23 million people in North Korea, if you let South Korea, China, and Russia save the neck of Kim Jong-il? You are the only hope to those desperate people. In fact, I heard the people in North Korea wanted a war to be freed just like the Iraqi people.
I am not a politician. I am not even a political activist. I only care about the people in North Korea and the refugees in China. I found out two years ago how terrible things were in North Korea, and tried to save some of them since. I found out that Kim Jong-il was directly responsible for this tragedy. And then, I found out Kim Dae-jung saved the neck of Kim Jong-il with his Sunshine Policy by pumping money into his pocket. I have been fighting like a mad man against Kim Jong-il and the pro-Kim Jong-il traitors in South Korea since then. Whoever kills my people in North Korea or aids Kim Jong-il are my mortal enemies. Whoever helps them or saves them will be my eternal hero. You are chosen to save them, Mr. President. As my hero Abraham Lincoln said 150 years ago, ¡°You cannot escape history.¡± I know you will save them because you have a big heart. You showed it to me on that fateful day, September 11, 2001.
Please do not let this killer Kim Jong-il go free. Instead, please let my people go free. They have suffered enough for the past 60 years. If you do not save them now, there will never be another chance. It is now or never! Let Kim Jong-il talk to South Korea, Japan, China, and Russia. Watch him try to wriggle his way out of this crisis with the traitors in South Korea. Let him try, but you should prevail. Prevail with human rights, compassion, and justice! Kim Jong-il even without his nuclear toys must be eliminated. He killed so many and he will kill as many as he can if he is let go!
I pray God give you wisdom and courage to see the right. You saved Iraqis in spite of all the opposition from within and without. You must save North Koreans who suffered much more than Iraqis. You are the only hope!
Sincerely,
Sin-U Nam, AIA
Korean-American Architect
Human Rights Activist
Lifetime Member of Lincoln Forum
