Selling My Daughter for 100 won
The Real Truth of North Korea

PREFACE

Hello, everyone, my name is Jang Jin Seong. I graduated from Kim Il Sung University and was a member of the North Korean Writers Union Central Committee, worked as a writer for the North Korean Labor Party and I am an escapee poet from the north. In North Korea Poets are called elite writers. The reason for this being the majority of writers who have gained the special trust of Kim Il Sung are poets. In other words, to ideally rule, it is preferred that even the people's emotions must be controlled by the government through advertising, porpaganda, and planned incitement.
In North Korea, the political party mouthpiece, the labor newspaper, sometimes features lyrical poetry and epics.

When I look at the newspaper with my poems filling the page, I sometimes recall having my picture taken with Kim Jung Il when I was in my twenties. There is no doubt that at that time I was happy. However, that was happiness as a slave. When I learned that the poorest country had the wealthiest leader my conscience made the decision to flee North korea and at last, in 2004, I entered South Korea. When I crossed the Tumen River I instinctively knew not to leave any trace of myself to be detected, but I held on to the notes I had made while in North korea and upon entering South korea I felt compelled to expose the starvation deaths of the three million.

Ration center
배급소

On the first day the ration centers closed
Nationwide
The government promised
Rationing will start again soon

That day will surely come
We worry more about our country
With no rice
Instead of our own hungry bellies
We sell all our belongings
We donate all we have
We hold our hungry stomachs
As we ho to work

One month, another month
We wait and wait
But the ration center did not reopen

Although the number of starvation deaths
Increased
We believed the government
So we did not believe our sorrow

In this way four years have passed
We did not know it
Three million had starved to death
