한국전쟁 발발 70주년을 기념하면서, 수십년 전 한국인들과 미국인들이 함께 치렀던 희생이 오늘날 우리가 누리고 있는 강력한 한미관계의 초석이 된 것을 보니 기쁜 마음입니다.

Hi everyone. I'm Harry Harris, the U.S. Ambassador to the Republic Of Korea.
As we commemorate the 70th anniversary of the start of the Korean War. It's gratifying to see how the shared sacrifices of Americans and South Korean so many years ago laid the groundwork for the strong relationship we enjoy today.

우리는 함께 전쟁의 비극을 극복하고 전세계에서 가장 강력하고 역동적인 동맹 중 하나가 되었습니다. 한국전쟁은 냉전이라는 긴 투쟁에 있어 최초의 대규모 전쟁이었습니다. 이 투쟁은 결국 공산주의에 대한 민주주의의 승리, 억압에 대한 자유의 승리, 그리고 봉쇄와 바리케이드에 대한 항로와 관문의 승리로 끝났습니다.

Together, we've triumphed over the tragedy of war to become one of the strongest and most dynamic alliances in the world. The Korean war was the first great conflict in the long struggle of the Cold War. A struggle that culminated in the victory of democracy over communism, of freedom over oppression, of sea lanes and gateways over blockades and barricades.

탁월함, 혁신, 창의성은 모두 자유로운 사회의 특징입니다. 한국이 바로 이러한 점으로 널리 알려졌습니다. 한국은 실로 자유로운 나라입니다. 희망과 긍정으로 역동하는 활발하고 번영하는 국가입니다. 그리고 아시아의 주요 리더이자 등불입니다. 오늘날 이 '고요한 아침의 나라'를 롯데타워 123층에서 내려다보거나 또는 부산 시내의 북적거리는 교차로에서 바라보면 우리보다 앞서간 영웅들이 70년 전 성취한 것이 얼마나 큰 유산을 남겼는지 알 수 있습니다.

Brilliance, innovation and creativity are all hallmarks of free society. This is what the Republic of Korea has come to be known for. South Korea is indeed a free country -- a vibrant, prosperous nation that pulses with hope and optimism, a key leader and a beacon of light in Asia. To see 'the land of the Morning Calm' today from the 123rd floor of Lotte tower, or bustling intersection in downtown Busan is to understand the magnitude of the legacy of what was accomplished 70 years ago by the heroes who went before us.

시간이 지나면서 한국이 변화하고 발전한 것처럼, 한미동맹도 마찬가지로 변화하고 발전해왔습니다. 한미동맹은 다차원적인 파트너십으로 공동의 가치, 공동의 우려, 그리고 공고한 인적유대관계가 뒷받침하는 경제 관계에 의해 더욱 강화되었습니다. 많은 미국인들은 한국과의 동맹의 새로운 면을 통해 직접적인 도움을 받고 있으며, 한국의 코로나19 대응은 세계적으로 모범 사례가 되고 있습니다. 한국 국가보훈처가 최근 50만 장의 마스크를 미국의 한국전 참전용사들에게 기부했는데, 이는 그들의 희생에 대한 통절한 인식이자 한미간의 변함없는 우정과 파트너십의 실질적 사례입니다.

As the Republic of Korea has evolved and developed over the years, so too has the U.S. -ROK alliance. Our alliance is a multi-dimensional partnership reinforced by shared values, shared concerns, and economic interests that are underpinned by deep people-to-people ties. Many in the United States are benefitting firsthand from a new aspect of our alliance with the Republic Of Korea whose response to the COVID-19 stands as a global example and model. The recent donation of 500,000 masks to American Korean War veterans by the Korean Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs is a poignant recognition of their sacrifice is an tangible example of our steadfast friendship and partnership.

지금 이 순간에도 우리가 알고 있는 세상을 바꾸려 하는 심각한 도전과 위협이 존재하고 있습니다. 우리가 이러한 위협에 함께 맞서는 것이 매우 중요합니다. 한미동맹은 한반도 평화와 번영의 토대이며 이 지역 전체의 안보 및 안정의 핵심축입니다. 전쟁의 참화 속에 형성되고 함께 흘린 피로 더욱 단단해진 한미동맹은 지난 수세대간 지속되어 왔으며 앞으로도 계속 발전할 것입니다. 우리가 이를 함께 챙기고, 자원을 제공하고, 헌신한다면 말입니다.

Even now there are serious threats and challenges reshaping the world as we know. It’s vital that we face these threats together. The U.S.-Republic of Korea alliance serves as a foundation for peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula and a linchpin for the security and stability throughout the region. Forged in the crucible of war and hardened by blood spilled together, it has lasted for generations and will continue to thrive for generations to come as long as we together nurture it, resource it, and remain committed to it.

그래서 이번 달, 우리는 한국전쟁동안 있었던 많은 분들의 희생을 기억하고자 합니다. 여러분도 저와 더불어 전사한 영웅들을 기리는 한편 앞으로 더욱 강해질 한미동맹을 기대하는 데 있어 저와 함께해주시기 바랍니다. 감사합니다.

And so this month, we remember the sacrifices made by so many during the Korean War. And I invite you to join me and honor the memory of our fallen heroes and then looking forward to the strength of the alliance and years to come. Thank you very much.
