미국 국방부가 북한의 가장 최근 미사일 시험을 탄도미사일 발사로 규정했습니다. 북한에 대한 외교적 접근 방식에는 변함이 없다면서도 힘을 보여줄 수 있는 지렛대는 충분하다고 밝혔습니다. 조상진 기자가 보도합니다.

미국 국방부는 북한이 14일 올해 들어 세 번째 미사일을 발사한 데 대해 탄도미사일로 분류하고 있다고 밝혔습니다. 존 커비 국방부 대변인은 이날 정례브리핑에서 ‘지난 5일과 11일 발사를 극초음속미사일 시험으로 주장한 북한의 가장 최근 발사를 어떻게 평가하느냐’는 질문에 “탄도미사일로 분류하고 있고, 현재로서는 이 정도로 해 두겠다”며, “정보 평가를 진행 중”이라고 답했습니다.

[존 커비 국방부 대변인]“We've classified it as a ballistic launch and we're going to leave it at that right now. We're still doing an intelligence assessment.”

커비 대변인은 지난 11일 정례브리핑을 통해서도 북한의 극초음속미사일 시험 주장에 대해 세부사항을 평가하고 있다면서 미국은 북한이 발사한 발사체를 탄도미사일로 보고 있다고 밝힌 바 있습니다.

미국 국방부는 지난 5일 북한이 극초음속 미사일 발사를 주장했을 때도 북한이 시험한 미사일이 탄도미사일이라고 믿을 만한 충분한 이유가 있다고 밝히면서 북한의 어떤 새로운 능력도 심각하게 받아들인다고 말했습니다. 커비 대변인은 “미국 정부와 동맹국, 파트너들이 활용할 수 있는 수많은 힘의 지렛대가 있다”고 강조했습니다.

[존 커비 국방부 대변인]“There are lots of levers of power that the United States government and our allies and partners have at our disposal. Obviously, President Biden has been very clear diplomacy leads and that would be no different here. Our priority is an, we already have security commitments on the peninsula. That's why we continue to discuss and maintain a close relationship with our South Korean counterparts and we're going to continue to make sure that the alliance is ready, as we say ready to fight tonight.”

이어 “바이든 대통령이 외교가 우선이라는 점을 매우 분명히 했고, 이런 입장에 변화가 없다”면서도 “우리의 우선순위는 한반도에 대한 안보 공약”이라고 확인했습니다. “우리가 한국 측과 계속 협의하고 긴밀한 관계를 유지하는 것은 그런 이유 때문이고, 오늘 밤에라도 싸울 수 있다고 말해 왔듯이 동맹의 준비태세를 앞으로도 계속 확실히 할 것”이라는 설명입니다. 커비 대변인은 “우리는 북한과 마주 앉아 이런 문제들에 대해 논의할 준비가 돼 있다는 점을 분명히 해 왔다”면서 “북한 쪽에서는 관심이 있다는 신호가 전혀 없다”고 지적했습니다.

[존 커비 국방부 대변인]“I think we've made clear, we're willing to sit down and talk about these issues with North Korea and there's been no sign of any interest in doing it in Pyongyang's part. We're continuing to work very closely with our ROK allies to make sure the alliance remains capable and strong and vibrant, and we were just there as you know, long ago. So our focus here is making sure that we can meet our treaty commitments to the people of Korea and on the Korean peninsula and in the region.”

그러면서 “우리는 동맹이 능력 있고 강력하며 활기차게 유지될 수 있도록 동맹인 한국과 계속 긴밀히 협력하고 있다”고 말했습니다. 커비 대변인은 “우리의 초점은 한국민과 한반도, 인근 지역에 대한 (방어) 조약 약속을 확실히 지키는 데 맞춰져 있다”고 거듭 강조했습니다.
