- talking with people in the cruise 3 -

여섯째, 또 다른 일본인들. 대부분 60대 남자들. 16강전 한국과 독일 전戰을 보기 위해 카페의 TV 앞에 앉았다. 경기 10분 전. 많은 관중이 모였다. 서구인 대부분은 독일인들. 그러나 동양인들은 20여 명이 모였는데 아무리 봐도 한국인들은 없었다. 설마 그럴 리가…내 옆에 앉은 양반도 일본인, 그 옆에도 일본인

Sixth, another Japanese. Mostly men in their 60s. It‘s time for the round of 16 of the World Cup. I sat in front of the TV in the cafe to watch the match of Korea and Germany. Ten minutes before game. Many people gathered. Most Westerners were Germans. Asians were about 20, but unimaginably there were no Koreans. The person sitting next to me was Japanese, and the person next to him was also Japanese. All but me were Japanese. I was wondering why there were a lot of Japanese instead of Koreans in this game. Anyway, the game started. When the Korean player’s shooting was missing, the Germans were just silent while the Japanese expressed regret all together. Finally, the Korean team scored two goals. The Japanese applauded as if their country had won. Seeing this sight I thank them for their support. The Germans left without comment. I told the Japanese next to me, "I really appreciate your support for our team," He said, "It’s natural to expect Asian team to beat others for the future of Asia." “Well, I think it’s good for Japan to advance to the round of 16. Korean team had no luck anyway. I hope that your team could get the round of 16 and then the 8 in a row.” I think this kind of friendly talking with others can be made when we meet strangers. It surely makes us feel more enjoyable. I found one interesting thing that those Germans were in a mixture of men and women, while our side was all men including me. .

일곱째, 2층 엘리베이터에서 만난 서구인 3명. 한 명은 30대 남자, 두 명은 60대 부부. 3층에서 인도印度인 남자 한 명과 여성들 5~6명이 탔다. 이미 공간이 없을 정도다. 다음 4층이 문제였다. 엘리베이터 문이 열리자 인도인들이 적어도 10여 명이 우르르 엘리베이터에 타려고 밀고 들어왔다. 이 때 누군가가 “노...노”를 외쳤다. 그러나 3층에서 탄 인도인 남성은 아무 일 없다는 듯이, “노 프라브럼, 노 프라브럼.”을 외치며 결국 다 태웠다. 이 때 내 옆에 있던 그 서양인 왈, “정말 재미있는 장면입니다.” 그래서 내가 말했다. “내가 인도 여행을 하면서 가장 많이 들은 말 중에 하나가 바로 ”노 프라브럼“이었다고. 그랬더니 이 양반은 정색을 하며 진짜 그러냐고 반문했다. 이 때 그 인도인 남자가 나를 보고 웃었다. 마치 자신들의 행동은 지극히 정상正常이란 듯이. 내가 그에게 말했다. “나는 당신 말에 공감한다. 실제로 우리 인생에서 지내고 보니 대부분이 노 프라브럼이었다. 기우杞憂에 불과했다.” 내 말을 들은 그 서구인들을 포함 우리는 다시 한 번 크게 웃었다. 이 때 인도인들의 반응, 특히 여성들은 그냥 어리둥절한 표정이었다. 인도인들도 역시 노인층은 영어에 매우 취약해서 우리가 무슨 말을 하는지 모르는 경우가 허다하다. 아무튼, 인도 역시 중국 못지않게 많은 인도인들이 세계여행을 즐기는 것을 보면 일단 나라는 잘 살고 볼 일이다. 

Seventh, three westerners on the second floor elevator. One was a man in his 30s, two were in their 60s. On the third floor, an Indian man with five to six women got on board. It seemed to be insufficient space already. The problem was the next four floor. On opening the door, at least 10 Indians pushed into the elevator to get on it. At this time someone shouted "no... no". The Indian man, however, shouted "No problem, no problem." The Westerner who was next to me at that time said, "It’s a really funny scene." So I said to him, "One of the words I heard the most while traveling in India was "No problem." Then he asked me again if it’s true what I was saying. At that time the Indian man laughed at me. As if their actions were absolutely normal. I told him, "I agree with you. In fact, my experience told me that most of my worries were useless." Including those Westerners who heard me, we laughed once again. At this time, the reaction of the Indians, especially the women, was just a puzzled look on their faces. With no English, the Indian elderly couldn’t know what we were talking about. Anyway, as many Indian people as the Chinese enjoy traveling around the world. Looking at it, I thought that the state should be above all rich and strong first. 

여덟째, 또 다른 엘리베이터 이야기. 14층에서 아래층으로 내려가려고 엘리베이터를 탔다. 우리를 포함 중국인 등 동양인들만 10여 명 이상이 탔다. 공간이 꽉 찬 느낌. 13층에서 60대 서양인 부부가 승강기에 오르는 순간 습관적으로 하는 인사, “굿모닝”을 한 뒤 등을 돌렸다. 순간 침묵이 흘렀다. 내가 곧 “굿모닝”이라며 인사를 받았다. 그리고 다시 어색한 침묵이 잠시 흐르면서 5층 카페에서 내렸다. 그 양반도 함께 내리면서 하는 말, “여기 누군가 영어를 하는 사람이 있는 것 같아요.” 내가 영어를 한다고 했더니 이 양반이 내 어깨를 툭 치면서 하는 말, 내가 “굿모닝” 했을 때 누군가 한 사람만이 “굿모닝” 하기에 적어도 영어를 하는 사람이 한 명은 있구나 생각했다는 것이다. 그리고 그가 누군지 궁금했다는 것이다. 좀 우스꽝스러운 얘기지만 서구인들의 동양 문화권에 대한 오해에서 비롯되는 현상이다. 흔히 말하는 사소하지만 분명 이것도 하나의 문화 충돌이다. 우리는 잠깐 복도를 함께 걸어가면서 동서양의 인사人事 문화의 차이점에 대해서 이야기를 나눴다. 그는 영국인이었다. 이처럼 세계인들을 많이 만나다 보면 우리나라 문화를 모르는 사람들이 많음을 알 수 있다. 우리도 그들의 문화를 모르듯이. 

Eighth, another elevator story. Got on the elevator to go downstairs from the 14th floor. About 10 Chinese people, including us, got on board. Feeling full of space. A Western couple in their 60s got on it at the 13th floor. He greeted habitually when climbing the elevator. "Good Morning" and they turned their backs. There was a moment of silence. I said, "Good Morning." And again, awkward silence passed. We got off at the 5th floor cafe. The man came down and said, "I believe someone here speaks English." I said I spoke English. This guy then, tapping on my shoulder, said, "When I said Good Morning, only one guy said ‘good Morning.’ So I thought at least one of them could speak English, and I wondered who he was.” It's kind of funny, but it's a phenomenon that Westerners don’t know about the Asian culture. It’s often said that it’s a kind of cultural collision. Walking along the corridor for a while we talked about the different manners between the East and the West. He was an Englishman. Interestingly, I often find that there are many foreigners who don’t know Korean culture when I meet them from all walks of life as we don’t know their culture either..
