UN 헌장 영어본의 51조는 집단자위권(collective self-defence)을 이렇게 허용한다.


Article 51


Nothing in the present Charter shall impair the inherent right of individual or collective self-defence if an armed attack occurs against a Member of the United Nations, until the Security Council has taken measures necessary to maintain international peace and security. Measures taken by Members in the exercise of this right of self-defence shall be immediately reported to the Security Council and shall not in any way affect the authority and responsibility of the Security Council under the present Charter to take at any time such action as it deems necessary in order to maintain or restore international peace and security.

Aucune disposition de la présente Charte ne porte atteinte au droit naturel de légitime défense, individuelle ou collective, dans le cas où un Membre des Nations Unies est l'objet d'une agression armée, jusqu'à ce que le Conseil de sécurité ait pris les mesures nécessaires pour maintenir la paix et la sécurité internationales.

일본어 번역본의 UN 헌장 51조,

"この憲章のいかなる規定も、国際連合加盟国に対して武力攻撃が発生した場合には、安全保障理事会が国際の平和及び安全の維持に必要な措置をとるまでの間、個別的又は集団的自衛の固有の権利を害するものではない。"

한국어 번역본은,

"이 헌장의 어떠한 규정도 국제연합회원국에 대하여 무력공격이 발생한 경우, 안전보장이사회가 국제평화와 안전을 유지하기 위하여 필요한 조치를 취할 때까지 개별적 또는 집단적 자위의 고유한 권리를 침해하지 아니한다."

집단적 자위권은 自國이 공격을 받았을 때 정당방위적 武力을 사용하는 것과 함께 동맹국 등 관련 국가가 공격을 받았을 때 武力을 사용할 수 있는 권리를 가리킨다.
